Tne Ottawa sharp-shooters celebrated the anniversary of their engagement at Cut Knife Creek by a dinner Saturday evening, attend- ing the dedication of the memorial window to Private Osgood, killed there, and decorating the grave of their fellow comrade. The Queen’s Own, Toronto, celebrated the day by a large church parade, over 600 turning out.

Anson Day.—The Hillsborough Park Committee have men at work improving walks and cleaning up the ground, ready for tree planting on Saturday. The Com- mittee will take charge of all donations in trees, and bave them planted where most required. We learn that a person giving the name of Wm. Taylor, a travelling watchmaker, is sailing around the country under false pre- tences. This ‘‘ party” represents that he is a relation of the well-known watchmaker, Mr. E. W. Taylor, of this city, and that he is connected with his business. We are requested to state that these represents- tions are false in every particular; and that as many complaints have reached Mr. E. W. Taylor from parties who have employed the itinerant jobber, it would be well for the public to be on their guard against pos sible imposition or fraud.

St. Martins, N. B., is greatly dis- turbed over the reported elopement, last Saturday, of a sweet young maiden of seventeen and a hitherto steady-going resident, who leaves a wife and four children behind him. When last seen they were serenely sailing past Salmon river, some time after sunrise Sunday morning, in a small boat.

The merchant does not require to keep alarge stock on hand swelling its price with interest, for the factory is an immediate source of supply to him,at the cost of a postal card, or at most a telegram. He loses nothing, therefore, from being overstocked. The article is a staple one, for which there is as constant a demand as for wheat or flour, and the merchant can therefore, sell it at a minimum rate of profit

Tue steamer Carroll arrived here at three o'clock this afternoon. She left Boston on the 24th ult., and arrived at Halifax on the 26th, where she remained till Saturday at noon, when she left for Hawksbury, arriving there at six o’clock Sunday evening, and leaving again for Pictou on Wednesday morn- ing, arriving sameevening. After coaling up the steamer left for this port, steaming slow, and arrived here as above stated. Lots of heavy ice is reported all the way from Canso to Cape George, and about forty sail in the Strait. There are no changes to note in the personnel of the steamer’s officers, all the old hands, including the popular purser, Mr. Nickerson, being at their posts—ready and willing, as usual, to attend to the every want Of all who patronize the route,

QviTE a sensation was created in the House of Assembly last evening, by the sudden extinguishing of the gas, while the hon. member from Summerside was discus- sing the budget. On investigation it was discovered that the sudden darkness was caused by the turning off of the gas. owing to a serious leak in the pipe in the Logisla- tive Library, the escaping gas from which had taken fire and threatened serious damage to the building. Some of the mem- bers of the Opposition, ever ready to cen- sure the Government, asserted that this was another deliberate attempt to keep them still further in the dark. Whether or not Mr. Speaker noted the objection we cannot say, but at any rate several lighted candles were brought in, the lion’s share of which were captured by the Opposition. be leak in the pipe was temporarily at- tended to and the gas again lit; while a message was sent to the Gas Works for a man to repair the damage. About a quarter past eleven he arrived and in searching for the leak he set fire to the escaping gas and the destruction of the building was again threatened. Here and there might be seen a messenger or other attache of the House, armed with a lighted candle and a terribly scared countenance, vainly endeavoring to explain the matter to some inquisitive M. P. P., while the ‘irrepressible’ A. J., from Mur ray Harbor, and the redoubtable Stephen G. discussed the matter from a compara | tively ‘‘safe” standpoint. Thus ended the most serious ‘‘gas’’ explosion we have had in our Legislative Hall for several years.

Cuicago, May 5 When the polics ordered the Socialist crowd away last night they threw among the poligs a dynamite bomb. The instant it struck the ground it exploded. Men fell dead on all sides; 29 mangled oflicers were groaning on the ground. A scene of horror followed, the Socialists taking ad- vantage of the excitement of the police, poured a steady fire into them from re- volvers. The police however rallied and dispersed the mob. Mitwavuker, Wis., May 5. Reports from Bay View say the military firedon the mob to-day, killing several rioters, Cuicaco, May 5, Eighteen hundred men in the Deering Harvester Works quit work to-day, without notice or demand MILWAUKEE, May 5. Latest reports state that seven Socialists were killed at Bay View, and the ring- leaders arrested.

DOMINION PARLIAMENT

Orrawa, May 4.

The Northumberland Straits Tunnel Bill received its second reading to-day, and was referred to the Railway Committee. Several other bills were put through all stages and discharged from the order paper. The House then went into committee of supply.

Hiome Rule and Gladstoue. Lonpon, May 5.

The Duke of Norfolk to-night, presided over a large meeting of Conservatives. He declared that Home Rule would produce a revolution.

Gladstone arrived in London to-day, and was met most enthusiastically, He is in robust health.

The Eastern Question.

Lonpon, May 5. England’s collective note, signed by England, Germany, Austria, Russia and Italy was presented to Greece to-day. The ultimatum requires assurance that Greece will disarm.

Home Rule.

Lonpon, May 6. A large and enthusiastic meeting of Liberals was held to-night at White's. Resolutions were offered endorsing Home Rule, eulogizing Gladstone, but asking him to amend his measures somewhat.

Difficulty in Burmah, Lonpon, May 5. News from Burmah to-day is very sen- sational, one despatch stating that Natives and Dacoits had taken possession of Man- dalay.
