Goixe To Wixyires —The Opening of a new ageacy in Wionineg by the Bank of Nova Scotia will rob Yarmouth of one of ite rast esteemed residents in the person of C A Kennedy, the agent there of the bank. Mr. Kennedy has been in Yar- mouth for only one year but during tbat short period he and his estimable wife have made a host of frieads, who, while deeply regretting their removal, will wish them happiness and prosperity in their western home. Mr. Kennedy was formerly in charge of the agency at Newcastle, remov ing from there to Yarmouth. He belongs to Charlotietown.— Halifax Chronicle.

Appte Crop a Fatture.—The apple

| crop ofthe United States is smaller than

it has been since reliable statistics have been collected. The total supply from the 1898 crop of the United Statee is 27,700,- 000 barreis, cenpared with something over 40,000,000 last year, and 70,000,000 in the record breaking crop of 1896. The fail- ure is widespread, reaching from the Pacific coast to Maine and in none of the states does the output of fruit ape p‘vach an average. In the great apple states of the west the crop is almost an ab- s lute failure, although the situation iv M.chigan is better than elsewhere. New York has only,one-fifth ofa full crop. The failure is attributed to the fact that during the blooming season there was excessive rainfall which washed the pollen and pre- vented proper fertilization by insects, while a cold wave added to the injury.

Tbe Moutreal Witness publishes the following humerous extract from a letter from James A D McBain, a Montrealer iu the service of the Sun Life Assurance Con + paar vtated at Bangkok, in Siam, Aug 22nd,

98 :—

“On Friday the King determined to send & man-of-war to Java to congratu'ate Hole land Oo the Queen's accession, really to show oft a Siamese man-of -wa; officered by Europeans (our examiner, Surgeon Major Hays, among the number.) They had steam up at 2 p m, on Saturday, as order- ed, but hours paseed and the King’s des- patches hado’t arrived. At 7 pm, a mes~ sage arrived thatthe King bad gone to sleep without signing the despatches, and to draw fires. So the officers went to a con: cert in the club, but were called away from there atll p m. The King wns awake! They sailed on Sunday at 5 am.

Naval Honors.

Lovisaure, Oct. 29.—The sailor drown- ed from the tender of H M S Cordellia, was Timothy McCarthy, a native of Killarney, Ireland, aged 22 vears. He was buried yesterday in the Roman Catholic ceme- tery with naval honors. The coffio war placed on a gun carriage, hauled by the blue jackets, and headed by the marines. The bagpipes played one of the “Gordon Clans.”

We may take it for granted that it was not through mere impulse, or mere coinci dence that s@ macy prominent British statesmen adopted #such an unusually bellicose attitude. The most probable ex- plavation is that they regarded war with France inevitable within a few years if the African question were permitted to remain in issue, and they saw no reason to wait for Franc- and Rus-ia to prepare for the struggle. Nobody suspects any of there statesmen of desiring war with France for the sake of war, ofglory, or of conques ; but a purely defeusive policy is not iacon- sisient with a due recognition of the im- portance of choosing the time as well as the place for a fight.
