Natiozal Division

The forty-sixth annual session of the Na- tional Division of North America opened at Ocean Grove, New Jersey, on Wednesday morning, July 9th. About 130 represent- atives were present from the different States ;@nd Provinces—from Prince Edward Island 'on the north to California on the avuth. At the public reception on Wednesday evening, Judge Ransom of New Jersey pre- sided. The address of welcome Was given by the Rev. Dr. Stokes, who announced the death of Gen. Fisk, which had just been wired from New Yerk, and which created a profound feeling of regret on the large audience assembled. He cordially and eloquently welcomed the N. D. to Ocean Grove. Rev. A, G. Van Aken also tendered a hearty welcome on behalf of the G. D. of New Jersey. The M. W. P, Rev. R. A. Temple, delivered an able ad- dress in reply. The venerable W. E. Me- Donough, of Brooklyn, sang with the usual effect *“The Old Oaken Bucket.” E. H. Clapp, of Mass., and B. J. Dennison, of Penn., also spoke. Miss Neliie Stearns, of New York, sang a beautiful temperance ode.

The business sessions of the National Divisions are held from 9 to 12 and 2 to 5. Thursday afternoon the officers were duly elected, and are as follows :—

A memorial meeting was held in the Auditorium on Friday afternoon, at three o'clock, the hour of the funeral of General Fisk in New York, when the National Division were invited to attend in a body.

The place for holding the next annual session is fixed for St. John, N. B., on the second Wednesday in July.

There has been a steady demand for choice fresh eggs, and the market for such goods is full firmerthan last week. But a large proportion of the receipts, especially of western, are badly xuffected by the hot weather, and give poor satisfaction even if handled with tho greatest cure. The town of Lethbridge celebrated its fifth birthday by taking a census of ita population. The growth of the place is typical of the steady progress of our North. west settlements, Five years ago Leth- bridge consisted of a few tents, but now it contaius 1,478 souls, the number of men being 789, women 181i, and children 408. The population is English-speaking, largel from Great Britain and Nova Scotia, a § Hungarians, Belgians, Swedes. Gernans and french are to be iound there two.

Fault has been found with the British authorities aud people for not extending needed help to surviving members of the Light Brigade which mace the famous charge at the battle of Balaclava. A relief iund is being raised in England, and the Secretary fur war has explained that ** the difficulty of drawing a line between the sur- vivuors of the Light Brigade and the men who performed the duties assigned to them with great gallantry and even more bhard- sbips before Sebastopol and during the Iudian Mautivy is insuperable. Early and Late Cut Hay.

The opinion is common that early cut hay is more valuable for feeding purposes, than what is cut when folly ripe, and that the early cus dues not teud so mach to exhaust the soil. The first idea is correct, but the econ is not. From experimente msde in ipd8 at the Stete Agricultural Kxperimental Statica of Ve.munt, it was found that in many instances the feeding value ef early cut hay was fully one dollar per ton more than that of late cut hay. It was found, however, that the late cut hay had rot extracted so much of fertiliz- ing properties from the sale iu proportion to thc whole weight as that cut eariy, There are two ressonas for this: First, in the ijatter stezes of growth other substances than fertiiiz- ing consiitueuts ave taken up faster in proportion to the increase of weight ; and second, sume of the former are washed oat by rain, Were it not that the feeding value of the early cut is greater than of the late cat, iz would be better to let hay get fully ripe, but this difference in feeding vasue more ‘ban covaterbslances the lows in comparative fertilizing properties. It follows then that the farmer whv feeds his hay, especially .to dairy cows, gets the best v»lue when the eume is cat early, bot that when itis sold he gets most the crop who cuts it late. The fertilizing value of hay is computed by ascertaining the respective amounts of ni » paosphoric acid and potash which it contains, multiplying thease by the market value of each, and adding the products.
