We quite expected a “Nancy Hanks” contest »few days ago, when the long looked for taotting match between the horse of Mr. George Smith and Mr. Donald Campbell was to have taken place, Bat when day and date arrived we found that expectation had been allin vain. Vur young tolks being of decided musical tastes, have sadly missed the singing achool this winter. However, the want of vocal melody has been ably supplied by our accomplished violinist, Mr. 8. McWade, who possesses a musical ability of no mean order, Mr. McWade met with what came very near termiaating ia a fatal accident a short time ago. Ashe and Mr, Ambrose Treanor, of Donsgh, were crossing the marsh, the ice suddenly gave way and Mr. McWade was precipitated into the water where he would undoubtedly have perished but for the noble efforts of Mr. Treanor who succeeded in saving his life at the risk of his own.

Our school is progressing favorably under the able tuition of Miss C. McMahon, Of the building itself, however, we are sorry to say that itis a fitting emblem of grit power, in as much as itis in a decidedly “shaky” condition. However, we have been iaformed that this state of affairs is to be remedied this year, and we are to have a building worthy of the intelligent and in- flaential people of Johnston’s River.

We are p'eased to chronicls the recovery of Mr. Dominic Smith, who ha* been suffering from a very severe attack of the mumps.

Among the next to depart will, we understand, be Miss Katie Smith and Miss Minnie Power, both of whom will be very miased by all. However, those who would probably feel their absence the most, will ere that time have also departed for the great and golden West.

The political situation is, of course, the lead- ing theme. The iniquity of the Peters com- bination being pitent, even to the dullest, we are decermined to ris2 in our might wher elec- tion day comes and consign the Gerrymander, Mortgage Vote and Disfranchisement of free- born British subjects to the limbo of dead and gone rescalities. The absence of Martin Smith, Esq., on the eve of the political jane tare is greatly to be regretted by the Conserv- atives of this locality. Mr, Smith’s terse ar guments and thoroughly honest and practical views have often been the means of exposing Grit fraud and corruption, apd it is the cause of general regret that he should have left as on the eve of the crisis.

Mr. W. White, late of Bangor, Maine, has purchased that large and valuable tract of land known asthe Keyhoe estate, Mr. White says that in ali his travels he has failed to tind any place that, in his mind, equals the Island as a farming country.

This very unfortunately, however, was the case in a church not one hundred miles from here, where a c'ergyman was cev- erely brought to task by one of bis congrega- tion, who conteaded that Mr was Loo personal in his remarks, and demandeed an apology, but this the learned man of the sac- red desk refused to grant, and for a time a lively and heated disonssion tock place be- tween the long suffering layman and the heroic divine, while a pugilistic collision was breathiessly awaited by the startled congrega- tion. The victory was, however, gained . the stern and persistent apostle, aud the con gegation dispersed by singing ‘To err is human to forgive divine,” and an old gray- haired veteran was heard to remark, ** Let brotherly love continue.” PRALiog.

James Blair's Case.

_ Napangs, April 10.—A highly interest- ing case has happened in this town, which i creating a good deal of comment. Mr. James Biair, a well known merchant tailor here, has for foarteen years been a sufferer from that terribie disease known as Bright's disease of the kidneys. He suffered so terribly that one hour's work at the cutting teble would completely exhaust him, and he had to s!must give up work altogether. He tried almost every known remedy for bis complaint, but without any good resuites, Medical men and patent medicines failed him, and he was gradually getting worse every day. Finsl'y he read a despstch in one ef the local p»psrs, stating that a man named Murray, living in Gravenhurst, had been cured of kidney trouble by using Dodd's Kidney Pills. Asa last resort Mr. Blair began taking these pills, and three boxes made anew man of him, and seven boxes completely cured him. Mr. Blair is back at work again, and says that he feels twenty years younger, and that these pills completely cursd him. His recovery has created quite a seasation. a A etrike that threatened to have serious consequences bas been started at Hull, Engiand. For some time past some of the shipping companies have been emp'oying non-union laborers to work in loadiag and discharging their vessels This caused great discontent among the members of the Dock Laborers’ Union, and a few days ago the unionists went on strike. Quite a large number of non-union men went to Hull to take the places of the strikers, and work about the ducks was proceeding satin. factorily until to-day, when the strikers assumed an offensive attitude, and by thrects and other means of intimidation succeeded in completely blocking work on every vessel in the port with one exception
