Committee Toke-examine UPEI Bud

Friday, the Committee on Education of the Legislative Assembly consisting of Education Minister Bennett Campbell ands six other M.L.A.'s mettwith university 1 President Baker and Student Union Presi— dent Gerald MacDonald to discuss next year's unicersity budget.

, Baker and MacDonald pointed out to them_ that unless the university gets more money then services will be worse while fees in- crease as much as 25%.

The Committee appeared to be very sym— pathetic to the arguments presented. It was shown that while services will decre- ase and fees increase, students at U.P.é- E.I, will have more difficulty than they have had for years to find the money to pay for their education. ‘

According to Mr. Campbell, the educae tion budget will be brought down in the Legislature tonight but the section on\ Holland College and U.P.E.I. will be def— erred until the Committee can meet with Sister Catherine Wallace. Sr. Wallace is the head of the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission.

.If after talking with Sr. Wallace, the Committee concludes that the university needs more money, then the funds will be appropriated.

Residence Fees Under Control

Rentalsman John Comeau told the Student Union Executive Friday that in his opinion reSidence fees here come under the Rental Review Act. \: ' r '

Under the Act,rent may not normally be increased more than 8%. However, a land— lord may apply to the Rentalsman's office for an exemption. If he can prove that his costs have increased sufficiently, then a higher increase may be instituted.

Further a legal opinion from Student Union lawyer, Ron Dalziel appears to in— dicate that tuitibn fees come‘under the anti—inflation review board. If this is the case then fees may not be increased more than 11% without appeal to the Board.
