Disastrous Fire,—About half-past four clock on Sunday afternoon, a fire broke out in the pattern shop ofthe New Bruns- wick Railway, at McAdam Junction, which quickly spread to the machine shop, boiler smith shop, tin shop and _ brass foundry. It was only by the greatest ex- ertions that the paint shop and storehouse were saved, «as also the office buildings of Mr. G. A. Haggerty. A valuable engine in the machine shop was destroyed, as well 1s all the toolsof the workmen. Twelve cars of lumber and freight, which were on a siding, were consumed. The loss is about S50 000, plosion of an oil lamp in the pattern shop The property is insured, but to what ex- tent is not known.

Commons to-day Sir James Ferguson, Parliameniary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, stated that the new treaty between Japan and Mexico was not yet ratified, The Government, he snicl, would shortly begin negotiations with Japan with the object of securing for England equal privileges with wll other countries. In relation to the treaty agreed upon by the Samoa commission at Berlin, it would not be proper to divulge the provisions until ratified by the United States. The statement that England agreed to retire from her position as one of the three protecting powers of Samoa, and act only as umpire between the United States and Germany, was unfounded.
