The minister had heard, so the story co's, that the painter’s grandfather had voted conserva- tive fifteen years ago, and this wa* consid- ered good ground for dismissal. The Moncton Times has not yet been able to verify the story.

Ixstrance Sratisrics.—According -to the Statistical Year Book published by the Canadian Government, in the twentv-seven years frem January Ist, 1869, to December Ist, 1896, the people of Canada paid tothe fire insurance com- panies of Great Britain, Canada and the Uniied States, $126,047,254 in premiums. During the seme period the insurance companies returued to the people the snug sum of $86,953,343 for tire losses. In otter words, the companies’ profits from their Canadian business in twenty-seven vears amounted to $49,093,9!1, or nearly million and a half of dollars every year.

Bruce, was rolemnized on Wednesday e¢vening Isat, The ceremon was performed by the Kev.D. B McLeod, at the residence of the bride’a motber, in the presence of the immediate friends and relatives of the participants. Miss Mary McLeod, of Orvell, was brides-maid, and Mr. A. A. Bruce, of Charlotte-townu, sup yorted the groom. Very many useful and handeome presents were received by the bride. After the ceremony supper was served, and at its conelusion the happy couple left for their home in Uigg, followed b» the best wishes of all who enjoy their acquaintance. The parishioners of Tignish presented the exceedingly popular and zealous assistant priest of that place, Rev. J. 8S. Turpide, with a magnificent fur coat and gloves to match, all made to special order by the tirst firm of Montreal,in St. Mary’s Hali on the evening of the Sib inst. Two flattering addresses,one in English reid by E.Hacketr, Kvq., and the other in French read by 8. F. Perry, Keq ,M. P., were also presented the talented young clergyman.
