Southport Ferry.
Sir,—During « period embracing from two to four weeks at the closing and open- ing of navigation the public traffic from Southport to Charlottetown is greatly ,im- peded, owing to the condition of the ize on the Hillsborough River, It is, as a rule, inconvenient for foot passengers, and often impossible for horses to be conveyed from side to side of the river at these seasons of the year. Those who do cross are often subjected to such delays and annoyances that nothing but dire necessity can induce them toundertake the disagreable task a secend time. The loss to all concerned, consequent on so defective an arrangement in connection with Charlottetown ferry, is very much greater than most people im- agine. It is very unfair to the people east of the Hillsborough, that no effort has, up to the present, been made to overcome these difficulties under which they have labored so many years. Weare very well satisfied with the accommodations pro- vided for vur ferry during the summer months, but are of opinion that when fall and spring arrive the present arrangement is insufficient, and the boats and equipments unsuited to crossing among drift ice, thin ice and lolly. Against the local govern- ment and the employes connected with the boats upon the ferry, we are not disposed to complain.
