International Cricket.

Purtaperrnia, July 15.

The annual cricket match between Can- ada and the United States began yesterday. When play stopped at six o’clock the United | States team had completed an innings with a score of 269, and Cannda’s score, with loss of one wicket, was 14. The Canadian team to-day finished its first innings with a total of 141 runs, and immediately started its second inning, making 97 runs. This gave them a total of 238 for two innings— 31 less than the United States in its single innings yesterday. The latter team were an easy winner of the match.

Embezzlement. Epmunpston, N. B., July 15.

The trial of The Queen vs. Cromar, charged with the embezz'ement of about $6,000 from the People’s Bank of Halifax, white in charge of the agency here, was concluded to-day. The jury found the prisoner guilty of larceny. He was given three years’ imprisonment in Dorchester Penitentiary.

The name of Colonel Charles Robiason, assistant secretary of the Horse Guards, and brother of Hon. John Beverley Robin son, late Lieut. Governor of Ontario, and of Christopher Robinson, Q C., is men- tioned for the position of commander-in- chief of the active militia in Canada.

OKa, Quebec, July 15. The last of the Protestant Indians, over whom there has been so much trouble in religious circles, have decided to accept the Dominion Government's offer and remcve to the Ontario reserves.

Short Line Railway.

Hazirax, July 15.

The Short Line Railway between Oxtord and New Glasgow was opened to-day, when the first through passenger train ran through and connected with the express for Halifax and St. John. The distance from Oxford to Pictou is 69 miles.

A project is now taking practical shape for erection in the heart of the city of 2 first-class, modern hotel, to accommodate 300 guests.

Phosphates in Canada.

Orrawa, July 15. A syndicate has been formed in England, with a capital of $5,000,000, to buy up the phosphate lands of Canapa.
