On Tuesday evening last D. Montgomery, Esq., Superi: tondent of Education, deliver- ed a most interesting and instructive lecture on Education, in Souris Court House. Mr. James McQuaid occupied the chair. At the close, the Rev. D. F. McDonald and Mr. Landrekin, teacher, made compliment- ary remarks, and moved a vote of thanks, to which the learned Jecturer responded in appropriate words. Ou Thursday evening in the same place, another lecture entitied **Building our own Monuments” was given by the Rey. James Carruthers, of Charlottetown. Mr, A. Currie presided as chairman. All present enjoyed a_ rich iiterary treat. Mr. Carruthers is deserved- ly entitled to rank among the most popular lecturers in the Dominion, The usual vote of thanks was given.

The little Telephone, published at Souris, for some time back, has succumbed to the inevitable, and will be seen no more. This is to be regretted, as it was always nowsy, dignified and patrictic, One would imagine that there is news enough in that part of the country at all times to fill half a dozen papers like the 7'elephone.

A singing school, by Mr John Ferguson, is to take the place of skating rink amuse- ments at Souris for the next few weeks. It commenced jast evening in the schoolroom under very favorable prospects.

It is pleasing to know that the wife aad family of Rev, D. H. Lodge are all safely recovering from a severe attack of scarlet fever.

The British madness

The budget presented by the Chancellor of the Exch hequer, afew days ago, shows that the expenses " exceeded the estimates by £11,600, and receipts exceeded the esti- mates by over £3,000,000. The duty on alcoholic beverages realized over £5,800,- 000. The beer duty exceeded the estimates by £270,000. The duty on foreign spirits exceeded the estimaies by £421,000, on home spirits by £1,101,000, and on wine by £12,000. The total receipts from alco- holic beverages exceeded the estimates by £1,800,000. The duties on coffee, cocoa and chicory showed a decrease of £17,500, while the duties on tea showed an increase of £40,000. Commenting on te gross revenue from alcoholic beverages, £22,: 265, - 000, Mr. Goschen said the fig rares showed a universal rush to the beer barrel, the spirit bottle and the wine decanter. Everybody seemed bent on toasting the national pros- perity and increasing the revenue. It was a circumstance that must be deplored, A loser examination would not diminish the surprise, for the largest increase had been of all the spirits in the world—from rum. Laughter.)
