Get Out And Vote Drive Launched By Legion

UTPAMFA. MB! 3 The Canadian Legion has launch- ed an attack on "apathy" and "indifference" with the objective of getting people to vote in the forth- coming Federal election.

In the last Federal election one of every four eligible to vote -— or about 1,500,000 persons — ab- stained. ‘rhere are 8.000.000 per- sons eligible to vote in the forth- coming election. He hopes none will abstain.

By launching the attack against indifference and apathy the legion “is endeavorlng to alert the Ca- nnadian public against the dangers facing a. notion whose citizens be- come indifferent to their demo- cratic NSDOHSIDIIIIGB.”

The four-pronged attack seeks:

l. To get every voter to ac-

quaint himself with the quest-

ions at issue and the attitude

of different parties. 2. To get the voter to choose

s party or support an independ-

ent candidate.

3. To get him to take some part in selecting s candidate. 4. To VOTE.

"Apathy," says the Legion presi- dent, "has permitted the establish- ing of small highly organized groups situated in partically every community in Canada."

By "subversive propaganda" they "are undermining the whole demo- cratic structure oi.’ our nation."

Therefore the offensive, and therefore the need to vote.

If the Legion attack falters. con- cluded the president, therell be reinforcements -— "the thousands of service clubs. parent - teachers groups, chambers of commerce, boards oi’ trade, teachers’ associ- ations. Women's organizations, labor unions. ministerial associat- ions nnd other civic-minded bodies" that will be ready to swing into the fight to protect "our great heritage —- freedom."

Objectives in the educational lino ‘were practically the tame as last year. One hundred dollars was given the scholarship fund. Prizes were given for Christian Doctrine, also prizes to grade XI. F011: hun- dred and fifty dollars was given our Pastor for church purposes.

Mass oflfcrings were made for deceased members, (or our Holy Father and one on the Feast of our Lady o! Good Counsel for the living members of the League.

The Treasurer's report showed our total receipt: for the year amounted to $1066.00 and our total expenditures to $890.00 leaving c balance of $172.0) in bank.

The convenors o! the church and sick committees presented very satisfactory reports. Enter- tainments consisted of n drama. and card parties held in the homes ct which the sum of $595.00 was realized.

The President, Mrs. John M. Mulligan briefly reviewed the work of the past year and expressed her appreciation to the Rev. Di- rector, the officers and members for their loyalty and support.
