viewed from two points of view, constitutional and the common sense,
From the constifutional point of view | it clearly appears that a majority of the | electors do not desire a reduction of the | Legislature, and, that rather ‘than have | such a redtiction, they are willing ’ that there should be a recurrence to direct taxation. There can be no doubt about | it. The issue—reduction of the Legisla- ture or direct taxation—was_ clearly drawn and set forth; and the country has decided in favor of direct taxation.
As the Government are compelled to look at the result from the constitutional poiat of view their duty is quite plain.|, The will of the people is supreme; aad it must be obeyed. The Government must abandon, for a time at least, the policy ot reducing the Legislature and go back to direct taxation, or they must resign.
Regarding the election from the con- stitutioual point of view, this ia the con- clusion which must be drawn from the} result.
But from the common sense point of view, the result has another and very differeut appearance
No one in his senses, who is conver- sant with the circumstances, supposes that the defeat of Mr. Bolger in the First District of King’s County was due to his faithfu'~*ss.to the policy of reducing the Legisla:are, or to his aversion to direct’ taxation, or to the fact thatthe electors wilfully stultified themselves and know- ingly went back on their record regard- ing the questioa at issue. Every who is conversant with stances knows | that and political revenge-—-embodied —in the persons of Dr. “MclIotyre and his friends—spread themselves abroad throughout the district; that. side isunes were every where raised to draw away the attention of the. clectors from the great isaue of the election; avd that Dr. Fraser did vot dare to ‘iesue a’ eard declaring that he was not’ for’ reducing the Legi-lature, and not for saving the taxes of the people.
It is also well known that the defeat of Mr. Johnson was (not due. to his straightferward advocacy of the reduc- tion of the Legislature: Indeed | the wonder is that, brought into the field at the eleventh hour, and opposed by a man who was “all things to all men aud anything to get io,” Mr. “Johnaton polled, so lange a vote as he did. That he poiled withiv 7. votes of »that treery politit individual,” his opponent; is highly significant of* the “estéem’ in which he is held and of the’ energy and influence of Mr. Collett and, other pro- minent supporters.
