Ar the Stipendiary Magistrate’ s Court this forenoon, Michael Pureell appeared for as- sauiting his father. The assault was in no way serious; but as Michael is a notorious vagrant, the Magistrate sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment with hard labor for vagrancy. Michael Began also appeared for an assault on Thomas Shepherd. He was firiéd and paid $10.

Tue residence of Mr. Charles Leigh, R..N., narrowly escaped destruction by fire to- -day. At half-past one o’clock the fire was disepver- ed where it originatel—among a pile of kind- ling wood in one of the apartments of the cel- lar. It smoked profusely foratime. Water from buckets stayed its progress until ‘*Silsby” engine commenced playing. She extingnishe i the flame in less than ten min- utes. No furniture was inoved from the resi- dence and very little damage was done in the cellar.
