The hall is being decorated quite tastefully, and the committee who have the affair in hand are working energetically to make it a grand suc- cess The music will be by Galbraith’s string band.

Tux British bark Ralph B. Peake was clear- ed yesterday by J. H. Grayhill, Esq., for Liverpoole*with 2,807 bails of upland cotten, § weighing 1,342,88) pounds, valued at $161,- 709.81. The above cargo is the largest for a woeden vessel, according to net tonnage, ever cleared from this port, and it is doubtful if it has ever been equalled at any other port.— Savannah Morning News, Sth January.

Tue monster Italian double-turreted iron- clad ‘‘Duilio,” the most powerful war vessel in the werld, in a trial of speed on Saturday, gave fourteen miles per hour. Her dimen- sions are: Length 339 feet; breadth 65 feet; tonnage 10,650 tons; thickness of armour 22 inches throughout; engine, 7,500 horse-power; armament four 100-ton Armstrong guns, firing projectiles 2,500 lbs. in weight, with powder charges of 350 lbs. She has also a powerful ram and torpedo beat.

A pespatcH from Chicago says there is likely to be a lively row inthe Butchers’ Union over funds eollected to carry on the recent strike. Twelve thousand dollars were collected and the officers of the Union can only account for less than $5,000. They charge that Frank O’Mera, one of the relief committee, absconded with the remainder. Patrich Welch, chairman of the committee, says O’Mera is made the scapegoat of Dan. O'Connell, president of the Union ; Dick Pow- ers, its orator, and Sullivan, its financial sec- retary, who are really these who stole the

$7,000.

Im the House of Representatives at Wash- ington, on the 26th January, a bill was intro- duced to ineorporate a cosmo-American Col- onization and General Improvement Bureau in the United States. The bill incorporates Thurlow Weed, Cardinal McCloskey and twenty-eight others as such bureau, the cap ital stock of which is to be not less than ene millien dollars, and may be increased; and the object of which is to be the encouraging, promoting and conducting of emigration from over-crowded cities and other districts of the United States and from Great Britain and other parts of Europe to the states and terri- tories of the United States needing immi- grants and for etler humane and commercial purposes.

H. Robertson, city; William Jewell, Thomas Mulligan, John Cavanagh, John Roper, James Callaghan and John H. Morrew.

Mr. Fred R. Peters, on behalf of the plain- tiff, then opemed the case. He stated that the action was brought to {recover damages from Bowers for having ‘‘ falsely and mali- eiously’’ charged Mitchell with having forged a note of hand.

The defendant has pleaded ‘‘ not guilty” and also another plea that is hardly a plea of justification but rather a plea in mitigation.

This morning John Lawson of the ‘‘Patriot”’ was put on the stand, but was ordered to stand aside for the present.

Mr. James Beales proved that the defend- ant had made use of the words complained of to him, and Mr. Angus McDonald and Mr. Richard Heartz, gave similar evidence. The ease will likely last two or three days. We will try and publish the evidence as it goes on.

__. Moncton Sugar Refinery.

A meeting of the shareholders of the Moncton Sugar Refining Company teok place on the 27th, at the American House, for the purpose of organizing under their Act of Incerporation. By-laws were passed and the company organized. The follow- ing officers were elected for the ensuing year :—

STOGK-TAKING.

W E hereby inform the pub- Island generally, that previous to Stock-taking, solved to clear out as much of our Winter Stock, as possible. We are aware that at this season it is hard to get people to buy even at reduced prices; but in the face of this difficulty we have made up our mind to adopt full measures, and sel] our Wool Goods and Dress Goods at a sacrifice.

Our Goods have been very cheap all winter, as the run of trade we have had fully testifies. Our store has become the resort of those Ladies who know how tomake a penny go a long way, and who know a cheap article when they see it; and when we say we are going to reduce the prices of our Dress Goods and Trimmings, we know we shall be believed. We are particul- arly anxious to clear out our present Stock, in order to intro- duce as much of the newest style of Dress Material as possible, and at the very lowest prices. We shall make special prices on Black Cashmeres. Black Meri- nos, Black Cords and Lustres, Lustrines and Brilliantines.

Our Fancy Wool Goods will be sold at less than cost. Our Stock of this class was the larg- est, most select, and finest in the city, and the remains of it will be sold at a great sacrifice.

Blankets, Quilts, Horse Rugs, &e., will be cleared out at great Bargains.

We make no apology to the Tea-drinking public for drawing their attention to our fine flavored and rich Teas, 32, 36, and 40 cents per lb. They are receiving the highest praise, and those who use them, strongly recommend them to others. Our trade in this article is growing rapidly. Tea appeals to the most subtile of the senses, and as the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so the proof of the Tea is in the drinking. Friends, try it.

Desjatches from Cabul state that Gen- eral Eright, at the head of a streng de- tachment of troops, has marched to Logar Valley, which has been the scene of the recent serious risings, and. encamped there with a view to suppressing disturbances and combinations among the tribes before they c:n do serious mischief.

There is good reason to believe that Mr. McKenzie will resign the leadership of the Liberal party shortly after the opening of Parliansent. His health of late has not been good. His auccessor as leader of the Liberal party will be Hon. Edward Blake.
