Arsenic in Domestic Fabrics

With rezard to arsenic there are op- portunities of observing what may be classed as experimental proofs, such as could not possibly occur in illness aris- ing from sewer gas. This further proof consis‘s in the frequent alternate reeur- rence of iligess and recovery —iliness on exposure to, andrecovery on removal from, arsemcal surroundings, followed by final recovery on substitution of a non-irsenical fabric in place of that cov- taining the poisor. Change of air is in all probability often credited with the benefits urising from removal from some unssnitery condition of 1esidence,oftice Or workshop. Theeffecton men em- ployed in bagging or removing arsenic wall papers is another proof of their in jurions quality—-men have freqentiy to leave their work unfinished,beinz too11 to continue under the poisonous iv- fluence. Arsenic in domestic fabrices is 80 easily dispensed with that there is no valid reason for the continued use of these poisonous colors. Several paper stainers have for years conscientiously excluded all arsenical colors from their works, yet have still maintained their position io the open market, thus de ciding the question both as to cost and qua'ily of non-arsenieal wall papers. It is ab jateresting question to medical men and chemists, how it is that these minute quantities of arsenic, or of some combination of arsenie with other in gzredients, When breathed should be so injurious, When larger quantities can be taken into the stomach as a medicine with advantage. This question, how- ever, is of no consequence to the patient. His course is simply enough: having found out the eause of illness, get rid of it,and be thankful it can be got rid of at so small a cost. Arsenic is also found in the dust of rooms papered with arsenical papers, (hus proving the pre- sence of arsenic in the atmosphere.
