Up to eight and ten the English lad maintains a lead, bat from that time on he falls behind until at eigh- teen the German is sixteen centimetres taller than his rival. The Humanitarian, in commenting on this, attributes the greater development of the German youth between eight and eighteen to the super- jority of the physical training to which boys in Germany are subjected. There is admittedly much to be gained by judicious and systematic physical drill.

Canadians everywhere will read with pleasure the following tribute to the Hon. Edward Blake from Mr. J. &. Hogan, M. P,, secretary of the Colonial party in House of Commons. In aa interview in Montreal Mr. Hogan said, speaking of Mr. Blake’s position in the House of Com- mons: “Mr. Blake made an almost in- Stantaneous mark as a debater in the Commons. His speeches on the Home Rule bill were luminous and masterly ex- positions of the constitution and law of the subject. On the platfurm both in London and the principal towns, he has been a tower of strength to the Home Rule propaganda. The recent election, that at Hackney, when a vacancy was caused by the elevation of Sir Charles to the peerage, the Liberal vicuory was practically won by Mr. Blake’s eloquent speeches on behalf of the Liberal candi- dates.”

One effect of the rush to enter goods at customs in the United States consequent on the going into force of the new taritf is expected to be a rapid increase in the gold reserve of the Treasury. In January last this had fallen so low that fifty million dol- lars was borrowed to replenish the stock; but in face of the steady outward drain it also soon disappeared, and at the beginning of lost month there was only $52,000,000 in the vauits, instead of the $100,000,000 the law says should be held for the redemp- tion of the various issues of Government paper currency afloat. In the past fort- night, however, there has been an increase and the reserve is now $55,000,000 and is growing daily. This is one reason for the confidence shown by financiers. There is, it may be remarked, no scarcity of gold in the United States, the national bank re- turns for July showing these institutions to hold over $200,000,000 in gold coin. There is, besides, a large quantity in state banks and private hands, so that there is an ample reservoir forthe Treasury to draw from once its revenues rise above the the demands upon it.

Dr. Emil Young, Professor of Physi- ology at the University of Geneva, is in great distress concerning the future of our legs. He suggests, in an essay in La Semaine Litteraire, that in course of a thousand years the human race may have lost the necessity of the use of legs, and retain those members of the body solely as ornamental survivals. Men refuse more and more to walk, though walking is the wholesomest of physical exercises. Steam, electricity, the rope railways, tri- cycles apd bicycles have changed the whole aspect of Swiss touring, as he says, in his own generation. “Everybody seems anxious to get everywhere in any way except by the use of his legs.” In another generation, he supposes, our tray- elling baloons will hang outside our win- dows, or our electrical coaches stand out- side the doors. They will be produced so cheaply that every man will have his own chariot. Hence our legs will be super- fluous, then they will be crippied and shrink to hideously small dimensions, un- til at last they will finally disappear. Our armson the contrary, will correspondingly lengthen and strengthen. ‘While our legs remain,” says Dr. Young, “let us march all we can.”

The Washington census has just given to the public the principal results cf the investigation of farm and home proprie- torship in all of the states and territories. Of the 12,690,152 families in the whole country, almost 48 per cent. own their farms and homes, and the rest hire. Of the families owning farms and homes, al- most 28 per cent. have incumberances, and over 72 per cent. have no incum- brance. The number of resident owners of land in the United States is 6,066,417, to which must be added any land owners

who may be living in tenant fam- ilies. The value of the 1,696,-

890 incumbered farms and homes is $5,- 687,298,096, and the incucubrances aggre- gate $2,132,949,536, or 37.50 per cent. of the value. The cities of 8,000 to 100,000 people have 214,613 incumbered homes, occupied by owners worth $739,846,087, with an incumbrance amounting to $292,- 611,974, which is 39.55 per cent of the value. In the cities of 100,000 popula- tion and over, the value of the 168,159 incuiabered homes occupied by owners is $934,191,811, and these homes are incum- bered for $393,029,853, or for 42.07 per cent of their value. The averaged value of each owned and incumbered farm in the United States is $3,444; of each incum- bered home, $3,250, and the average in- cumbrance on each of the farms is $1,224; on each incumbered home, $1,292.

Crapaud Wste being situated in the centre of a fine farming country, and also being the chief business centre of several other thriving villages which are themselves sur- rounded by beautiful farmiug settlements, is truly one of the loveliest places in the Province, Doctors, shoemakers, saddlers, carpenters, merchants, tailors, painters, &c., residing here are busy all the time. The natural scenery at present is, beyond doubt, grand, and judging from the opin- expressed — by tourists, it is fone™of the most pleasing and most picturesque Jocalities on the Island. Taking into consideration the modern-like architectural style of the dwelling houses, together with the general aspect of the whole place, one could not help but con- clude that the inhabitants are a busy, thrifty and energetic class of people.

The Crapaud creamery, which was built last spring, bids fair to beoeme the leading factory on the Island. Its success so far proves that the farmers of this section are a go-ahead class. Professor Robertson, ex- Governor Hoard and others, in their recent visit, expressed themselves as being highly pleased with the results as well as the general working order of the creamery. | Mr. Pearson, the manager, is the right man | in the right place.

Mr. A. McFarlane, who has the contract of the Methodist Church, will have it ready for re-opening. The repairing of this church reflects mach credit upon the people of Crapand west and the untiring efforts of the trustees in managing the business devolving upon them are worthy

of the highest commendation. Rev. Mr. King, it is said, will officiate at the re-

Crapaud west school is doing well at present. A good deal ot repairing has been done in this school during vacation, which is satisfactory to all concerned, and which elicits the fact, that the board of trustees, parents and rate-payer?, are ever ready todo anything that will tend to make the school both comfortable and at tractive.

O. B. Wadman, proprietor of the Far- mers’ Grocery, is doing a good business. He is always anxious to raise the standard of the place, both moral and intellectual, and the very deep interest which he takes in church affairs on every occasion is worthy of the highest praise.

Mr. Isaac Beer, our popular tailor, is now learning the art of painting with Mr. D. McKenzie, who is putting the finishing touches on the Church here. Mr. Mc- Kenzie is a first-class workman, and can mix colors to perfection any shade desired.

A goodly number of our American cousins have been visiting Crapaud this summer. “Phey are now making prepara- tions to leave for home, but they are all of the same opinion, “ No place like Prince Edward Island.”
