Advices from Japan state that according to the latest reporcs published in the Oska Shimbun, two hundred and thirty-eight houses were destroyed and 217 persons kill- ed or drowned by the floods in Totsukawa. Several thousand persons are destitute of food. A telegram from the chief police in- spector of the Wakayama prefecture, dated Aug. 30th, announces that 1079 persons were drowned by the late fioodi, 122 crush- ed to death and 143 injured severely. ‘Iwo thousand and forty-three houses were swept away and demolished, and 26,386 buildings submerged and many bridges and embank- ments damaged. The typhoon at Tokyo and neighboring prefectures demolished

A BOX OF CANDY SENT 10 THE REV. MR, MOWATT, OF FREDERICTON,

FREDERICTON, Oct. 8.—On Saturday eve- ning Jast one of the clerks in the Post Office handed to Postmaster McPeake a small box addressed to the Rey. A. J. Mowatt, city, and answering the descrip- tion of those received by St. John clergy- men last week. Mr. McPeake, thinking that perhaps the box contained poisoned confectionery, delivered the same, per- sonally, to Mr. Mowatt, at the manse, when on opening it,it was found to contain half dozen pieces of candy. The box and contents were then sent to the police magistrate, who afterwards consulted with the Attorney General. The candy was carefully examined, but there was no evi- dence of poison. When the box was taken from the basket iin the Post Office, the ink was scarcely dry. This is, no doubt, the work of a practical joker, but in view of the horrible crime in St. John it is not a joke to be appreciated.

Care of the Feet.

Concerning the care of the feet, the Scientific American very truly says: Many are careless in the keeping of the feet. If they wash them once a week they think they are doing well. They do not con- sider that the largest pores are located in ithe bottom of the foot, and that the most ,ollensive matter is discharged through the pores. They wear stockings from the beginning to the end of the week without change, which become perfectly saturated with offensive matter. Lil health is gener- ated by such treatment of the feet. The pores are both repellants and absorbents, and fcetid matter is taken back into the system. The feet should be washed every day with pure water only, as well as the armpits, from which an offensive odor is also emitted, unless daily ablution is pr-c- ticed. Stockings should not be worn mure than a day or two at atime. They may be worn one day, and then aired and suuned and worn another day if necessary.
