SOME HAVE FEARS

Although there appears to be Wide support for abolition in the Commons, many groups—in- cluding judges and police—have expressed fears it would lead to an increase in crime.

The new bill was presenetd by Sydney Silverman. a grey-. bearded Labor member who‘ has been presenting similar bills since 1948. It is co-spon- sored by two other Labor mem-4 bers. twn'Conscrvatives and aj Liberal. t

ecause it is a private mem- ber's bill and does not have of- ficial sponsorship of the govern- ment. all members will be ad- vised to vote according to con- viction and without any guid- ance from party ships.

Speculation is that most bar and Liberal members Willi support the bill while many} Conservatives will oppose it un-: less there are firm guarantees that prison sentences for mur-i der will be more severely en-i forced than in the past.

To meet these doubts the bill} provides for “further provisionsi for the punishment“ of persons convicted and it is thought likely
