Reassuring Statement of the Premier.

Lenpon, May 7.—The annual meeting of the Primrose League was held yester- day. Lord Salisbury discussing the Greco- Turkish question said that the main ob- ject ot the European concert was to pre- venta European war, adding thst the belief prevailed that all danger of such a war was finally dissipated, and the peace of Europe, apart from the local conflict, had bean placed on a better basis and had a better hope in its future than ever before.;
Her Majesty’s Government, the Premier said, would do its best to endgthe blood- shed. In his concluding references to the wrr Lord Salisbury said: “The openiog of the eastern question was greatly dreaded, but it"has now gone lkea nightmae. There has been great terror that any out- break in the southeast of Europe might lead to a general blaze But it is to be hoped thatthe danger is pxst and tha we may look calmly on the larger interests involved.”

COLD STORAGE AT CHAR- LOTTETOWN.
A Monthly Steamship to be Provided.

Qrrawa, May 7—In the agricultural committee yesterday forenoon, Professor Robertson outlined fully the cold storage programme.
Arrangements have been made for the coming summer to provide storage equip- ment in seventeen steamships sailing from Montreal. Arrangements have also been made for storage accommodation on steam- ships sailing fortnightly from Halifax and St. Jobn, and for a monthly service from Charlottetown. The extra charge for cold sturage freight is to be 12 cents per 160 pounds.
In the House of Commons, yesterday afiernooa. the Opposition won a partial triumph over the Postmaster-General, who, after a long debate, conrented to give an inyestigation to the Beamsville post- master who was dismissed without an inquiry, and who has been hitherto re- fused a hearing.
Malcolm & Ross have secured the char- ter of the Restigouche and Western Rail- way from Baie des Chaleurs, at Campbell- ton, to St. Leonard, on the St. John River. It is proposed to cross the riverat Vance- boro and connect the line with the Bangor and Arovustock road.

LoNxpon, May 7—In the House of Com- mons yesterday the Secretary of the Foreign Office, replying to a question as to whether in consequence of the tariff pro- posals of the Canadian Government, the Government of Great Britain was _ consid- ering the advisability of renouncing the treaties of commerce between Great Britain. France, Germany and Belgium said that the matter was receiving the careful con- sideration of the Government, but he was unable to make a statement at present.

Local members of the immigra- tion staff were kept buey answering inquiries ani directing the newcomers, who are bea'thy and promising eettlers. All of them have more or less money, and besieged the Montreal bank during the day totash their bills of exchange. Con- siderable sums were spent by the new arrivals in the city for farm tools, provi- gions, etc., and in addition many of them had large quantities of effects, as the depot platform was crowded with boxes and bundles of luggage.
