Canada Temperance Act.

We fiad the following in the Canada fazette of the 1LOth inst.

‘‘His Excellency, on the recommenda- tion ef the Honorable the Secretary of State, has been pleased to declare, and it is hereby declared, that the second part of the Caneda Temperance Act, 1878, shall be in furce and take effect in the said City of Charlottetown npon, from and after the day on which the annual or semi-annugl licenses for the sale of spirituous liquors now in eae in the said City will expire, provided such day be not less than ninety days from the date hereof, and if it be less, then on the like day in the following year.

: Dr. Tanner.

Dr. Tanner has been weighed six times since he entered upon his fast, and the scales show that he is growing beautifully less by degrees. When he started on his go-as-you-please against starvation, he weighed 1475 lbs., the temperature of his body was ninety-nine degrees, and his pulse averaged about eighty-eight. On theafter- noon of the second day he was weighed opce more and he tipped the beam at 153 lbs. ‘The third time he got inte the seale was onthe fifth day, and his weight was 1474 lbs. Tho next time was on the eighth day, and the register showed 1434 lbs. On the following day he went down to 141} lbs., and yesterday afternoon, the eleventh day of fasting, he showed 1393 1bs. Thus he has decreased in the following manner:

No accurate record has been kept of the amount of sleep taken by Dr. Tanner dur- ing the first eleven days of the ordeal. He drops off into a deze often five or ten minutes at atime, and again -he will sleep soundly for four or five hours. He proba- bly averages about six hours sleep ont of every twenty-four. His favorite position in slumber is on his face, thereby compres- sing the stemach and preventing it from

acquiring any. balloon qualities which might be unpleasant. This morning he

left his cot in the balcony on the main hall and jay dewn in his old bed in the centre ef the hall. A number ef persons were present at the time and regarded the faster with interest. They evidently did not believe the stories told of his “‘playing fast and loose” with the doctors. Later in the day there was seme music, which the decter enjoyed excessively. His confidence in his ability te complete his task continues unim- paired.

Serious Stabbing Affray.

NortH Sypney, July 15, A serious stabbing aflray occurred last night, about midnight, on board the bark

mate, Mr. Smith, was trying to keep them from going on shore to get more liquor, when this Flanagan stabbed the mate, it is supposed with a sheath knife. The knife entered above the right lung, going ina slanting position, downwards through the lung. The doctor says if it had gone in a straight line he would never have breathed again. Flanagan was arrested and lodged in jail. The other three were found in the weeds in the morning, having deserted, and were also ledged in jail. Their trial comes off to-morrow. The mate is in a pretty bad conditien.
