Islander Heads Union

William P. Cantwell, the newly elected pr ident of the New En!- jmd Typographical Union, is 50 years old. He was born in Boston but went to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, with his parents lwhen but two years old, He is mar- ried and has two children, and is regarded by his fellow workers in Worcester as a 800d Print" Hid B" able and conscientious worker for the cause of trade unionism.

He came to Worcester from Prince Edward Island, Canada, when o, young man. having sevred his apprenticeship with his brother Percy, who is now connected with the Veterans‘ Bureau in Provid- once.

one of his first jobs in a print shop in this district was in Marl- boro, where he worked for several years, and came to Worcester 32 years ago to work in the Harrlgan Press composing room.

He later secured a “sit" on the Telegram, but shortly after went to Chicago where he took a. linotype course in the Inland Printer School. After graduating from the School, he worked in Keokuk, Iowa, and other cities in the middle West, and within a few years returned to Worcester, where he secured ‘au- other situation on the Telegram, but later went to rlovldence, where he worked on the Traveler for four years. I-Ie came to Worcester in 1015 and worked on the Evneing Post until 10 years ago, when he assumed charge of the advertising department of The Labor News. He returned to the Post four years ago, where he has since been employed on the night shift.

During his entire memberschip with the Typographlcal Uniom his efforts have been directed toward bringing members of organized La- bor to a realization of the benefits to be derived from union label ac- tivities. As a. member of the label committee of meal 165, he has ever been active in the promotion of plans along this line, and is now making a thorough study of the Denver plan, which he believes can be made most effective in convinc- ing merchants regarding the value of using the printers union label 0n their printing.

Mr. Cantwell is also a conscien tious advocate of Women's Auxil- iaries. and was recently made chair- man of a committee for the pur- Pose of forming a branch of the national association in Worcester.

i Georgetown Horse Races yester- dly drew an attendance of about 2,000‘ people. There would surely have been another thousand had the rain held off, but a downpour about one o'clock kept away large numbers It turned out beautifully fine with a. nice breeze, and the afternoon was a most enjoyable one. The races were good and keenly contested, the track record being broken both for the trot and pace and a new performer entered the list in The Willys, own- ed by Mr. Charles Iteardon, of Charlottetown. This pacer is a. full brother of Jacqueline, 2.10, was pur- chased 1m winter and has been cared for and developed by Mr. l-Ie met with an accident at Summerside, Dominion Day, which many thought would put him out of racing, but he came back sound and strong yester- day and took the very creditable re- cord of 2.16% in the third heat, which stamps him as a pacer of

2.30 Trot and Pace-This had 'no less than eight starters. They were a difficult bunch to get away, as some of the drivers were lacking in experience. First Heat. After four scores the word Go was given to a fairly 800d start. Peggy Todd at the pole. made a bad break at the first turn and. ran all .the way around to the eighth. The Willys was not long taking the lead, fol- -lowed by Lady Orwell and Barbara Martin, the latter is said to have stopped some rather glib miles in the U. S. A. She looked a. good trot- ter for three parts of the journey, then faded a. bit and Sharpsburg came on driven by his three score years and ten plus five, Owner Mc- Millan, finishing a bang up second to The Willys, with Lady Orwell, who trotted beautifully, third, Bobby Burns, fourth. La Rico show- ed a lot of speed, but made a. break which ruined his chance. Colonel John was distanced. Time 2.21%.

Second Heat - This was The Willys all the way, with Lady Or- well and Bobby Burns fighting for second position, La. Rico a. nice fourth, Barbara Martin fifth. Sharpsburgb tire came of‘! almost at the word Go and wound around the wheel, checking the speed of the horse.

‘Third Heat-Jrhe Willys was driv- en as though out to gbreak the track record, opening up a. long lead at the half and’ increasing it consider- ably untll at the finish he was lend- ing about forty yards. Lady Or- well was again second, having trot- ted beautifully throughout, Bobby Burns third and Peggy Todd who had attended to her knitting, that is stuck to the pace, Barbara Mar- tin fifth. Time 2.16%. When it was announced it was thought it would put The Willys out of the 2.25 Pace at the local Exhibition, but the rule this year is that s. record of 2.16% or better means a transfer to the next fastest class.
