A special meeting of the City Council was held last evening. Present, the Mayor,

Councillors Murphy, Lawson,Horne, Davy,

Hooper, Crabbe, Koughan, Byrne, Morris, Beer. se

The appointment of Mr. John W. Pick- ard to the office of Engineer of the Fire De-

rtment was confirmed. : "hae were read from Messrs. J. D. Irving, Lemuel Phillips, William Murray, and A. L. Brown, stating that they wished to be relieved of the office of Fire Warden.

These resignationa were accepted, and Messrs. Augustus Hermans, Charles Rebert- Peter Halloran, John Lewis and

oem, . _ r Samuel Lowe, were appointed Fire War- dens.

Councillor Beer intreduced the following resolution :—

‘* Resolved, That a Committee of five, of which the Mayor and Recorder shall be two, be appointed to prepare a Bill to re- vise and conselidate the City Act ef Incor- poration and introduce such amendments as may be required for the purpose of im- posing additional taxes upon such citizens and persons doing business in the city, but residing outside the city limits, who con- tribute little or nothing towards the city revenue, and also the mode of collecting all taxes, and report the same to the Council, and submit such Bill toa meeting of citi- zens to be called for that purpose with the view of laying it before the Legislature at their next meeting, with the request that they pass the samo in the early part of the session.”

The resolution was carried on the follow- ing division : For—Councillors Beer, Law- sen, Davy, Hooper, Horne, Morris. Against—Councillers Murphy, Crabbe, Koughan, Byrne.

Read a letter from certain residents of Great George Street, asking for a survey of the side lines of the street. Referred to Street Commmittee.

A letter from the City Surveyor about surveying the street was referred to the Street Committee.

Professor Hind’s Find.

Tue St. John News says: ‘‘ Professor Hind appears to be in great affliction over adiscovery made by him that the figures used in the British case before the Halifax Commission respecting the quantity of fish taken in Canadian waters differ some in ene way, some in the other, from the figures relating to the same matter embedied in departmental repurts. But although the net result shows that the so-called crooked figures represents the mackerel catch in Canadian waters as smaller than it really was, the Professor contends that the effect was to cheat the United States by securing a larger award against them than the true figures warrante|.

“The Toronto Globe brands the Profes- sor’s find as ‘s ware’s nest,’ and his leading charge as utter rubbish. It closes by saying that ‘the best proof that Mr. Hind’s ‘errors’ are of no value as showing that the United States has been wronged is that, though they were brought under Mr. Evarts’ notice long ago, they have never been made use of. If Brother Jonathan had been as much hurt as Mr. Hind wants to make out, he weuld soon have ‘squealed.’”’

When the R. M. 8. Sarmatian was leaving, one of the ordinary passengers, a military gentleman, en route to Halifax, requested the saloon steward t: reserve a couple of seats at the Reyal table for himself and lady. Whe- ther the steward was impressed with the be- lief that the bold worrner had a legitimate right to make such a request, or whether a **tip” did werk the oracle, deponent saith not, but the additional chairs, &c., were duly forthcoming. When the bell announced the first meal, the Colonel of the Queen's house- hold, haying charge of the Royal party, notic- ing the state of aflairs, requested the steward to inform him fer whom the additional seats were intended. After hearing the man’s rea sons for providing the extra plates, etc., the Colonel significantly remarked that he had no wish to increase the royal party, and the promising pair had to rest coutent with seats ** below the salt” at the table of ordinary trav- elling mertala. Thus were the mighty. put down from their seats and possibly rendered humble and meek.—Hzx. Evening Mail.

Of the exports of last year, $1,249,833 | dollars’ worth were from the port of Char- lottetown and $252,579 from the port ef

Summerside. The returns show that the export trade is

undergoing a complete change. Of lumber and other produce of the forest exported, there has been since 1876 a decrease to the amount of $54,160, and of ships exported there has been a decrease since 1876 of $293,730, while of animals there is an in- crease of $25,887, and of eggs an increase of 59,155 dozens. The difference between our exports of petatoes in 1876 and 1879 is
