Tue Bank of Montreal has declared a half yearly dividend of five per cent. payable on December ist. The statement of earnings for the half year wil! be issued about the middle of November, the dividend being based on earnings for the five montht with an esti- mate for October. The statement it is said is likely to make a good showing. There is an increase in the dividend.

S., has been committed for trial for affixing a ecard to the store door ef Ells, another merchant of that place the card bearing the words: ‘Fires set low; a hoss and wagon aud two loads of furniture taken in part payment,” which was taken to mean that Mr. Ells had been guilty of incen- diarism, and had received payment for his crime.

Berween thirty aod forty men, from New Glasgow, N. S., and P, E, Island, were second-class passengers on the express train from Moncton, om the 25th. They were all bound for Portland, Bangor, Eastport and other points in Maine, U. 5., to work in the lumber woods. There were also several families of immigrants, first-class passengers, from the Island. Their destination was Bos- ton.— Moncton Transcript.

Dr, Cray, Immigration Agent, at Halifax, writes to the Moncton papers regarding the whereabouts of an English lad named James Francis, 11 years of age. He was an immi- grant, placed with Mr. *. G. A. Morrison, of Acadia Miaes, for adoption. Mr. Morrison sent him to Moncton, but he has not been heard of since September 1882. It is hinted that the remains of a human being seen by two women in the blueberry plains near Moncton are the remains of the missing boy. H. M. 8. “Grirvon” sailed for Halifax this forenoon at ll o'clock. Previous to her depar- ture a large number of citizens called on Commander Davies and his officers, and bade them farewell. The gallant Commander leaves our shores carrying with him the best wishes of our citizens and a host of his oid acquaintances. He is now forty-three years old, and was educated at the Normal College of the British and Foreign Scheol Societies. At Tamatave he has superintem@ed every de- partment of missionary work, religious and educational. medical and mechanical, includ- ing the erection of schools and churches. As the operations have proceeded oil has been met with at times and during the last day or two the shale brought up was im- pregaated with oil and burned freely. On Wednesday the flow of oil began to be con- tinuous and it had continued so when our correspondent Isst wrote. The oil is remark- ably pure. There is no doubt that a deposit of oil has been struck, the only question to be decided being as to the quantity. If it proves to be large look out for a boom in Belliveau mining shares.—St. John Telegraph. ——___ A MARKET messenger boy who was not certain of his destination, met with a very heavy loss yesterday. He was sent by a butcher, with a leg of mutton, to the residence of Mr. George Hooper. On Euston Street he fell in with a man of whom he enquirel the whereabouts of Mr. Hooper. ‘The stranger in answer said: ‘‘1 am just going to Mr. Hooper’s and I will take the mutton apd save you the journey.” lt was given in good faith, and no doubt with thanks. Mr. Hooper, however, has not yet smelled a chop from the quarter, and he never will, for the strange man had a soft lift, and made the best of it. Wiis In the Wayne county Circuit Court, De- troit, Loveila Benedict began a divorce on the 19th inst., against Llias Benedict, to whom she was married at Buckhorn, Kent County, Ont., December 31, 1878, The bill recites that in the winter of 1882 Benedict took his wife into the north woods of Michigan, and there made her do manual labor fit only for a strong man, She was forced to pull one end of a cross-cut saw, sawing logs in the snow. She frequently fainted from exposure and over-work. Once he threatened to burn her on a heap of logs, and tortured her with a red hot iron, and with salt and vinegar to make her promise to apply for 4 divorce. The final allegation is that Benedict has wasted the property and sold their home for a mere pittance, and now neglects to support her. The complainant is twenty-five years old. —-~.>—_—

Nor long ago an Irishman named Peter McEnerney died in Birmingham, Conn. He had come over from Ireland but a few years before. He left a family of seven children, the oldest of whom is twenty-one. He kept a small grocery store, keeping up some show of respectability, yet living apparently on almost nothing at all. At his death he left no will and the widow and orphans expected to fare but poorly. As the administrator went to work, however, he revealed new wonders at every step. First a large amount of real estate belonging to McEnerney, and amounting to about $100,000 in va'ue, was discovered. Hardly was the surprise at this over when word came from Fisk & Hatch, of New York, that they held $150,000 in bonds for McEnerney. How the man collected so
