Young Touslehead. son of Rat- tles the Kingfisher, had learned the meaning of fear. It was s most Important thing to learn. For the first two days after leaving the nest, Touslehead had been un- afraid. He hadn't known -what fear was. I-Ie:hadn't known that there was such a thing. Then he had seen one of his brothers caught by Falco the Duck Hawk. and right then and there he had known fear. He had learned to be afraid. ‘

So it was that now while he was watching for small fishes that he might catch. he also was all the time watching for Falco. Every big bird he saw he feared might be Falco.

It. was several days before Touslehead saw Falco again. All the time he kept wondering what

stoppvd.

"Cats aren't always friendly, Porky." he explained. "It is wisest to leave strange ones alone."

And Perky. burrowing his sore

nose into Bart's sleeve. agreed.

He knew he wouldn't have a chance in the world to escape the terrible claws of Falco by trusting wholly to his wings.

“The only thing I can do is to keep out of sight. I mustn't ever let that terrible fellow see me." thought Touslehead. "But I t-aii't fish and keep out. of sight at the same time, and I can't live with- out fishing. I suppose the only thing I can do is to try to make sure of seeing the hawk In time to get to is safe place."

It was the very next day that Touslehead heard his father's sharp rattle out over the Water. He looked out to see Rattles fly- ing low above the water. and be- hind‘him was coming l'<‘alco the Duck Hawk. He wondered if his father saw Falco, or knew that he was behind him and coming so swiftly. He wanted to warn him. but of course he couldn't. All he could do was to look on with a terrible fear. He was going to see over again the same dreadful scene that had taught him to be afraid.

Falco was shooting down with his feet set to strike Rattles. It seemed as if Rattles was standing still in the air. The young king- fisher closed his eyes Just. for an instant. He opened them again just in time to see a splash iii the water. At first he didn't under- stand what it ineam. He saw Fslco flying on down the Big River. and then to his happy surprise he saw Rattles flying straight in toward him. Falm didn't have him nfwr all. A moment later his father joined him.

“Why didn't he catch gasped Touslehead.

"I played a trick," replied Rat- ties.

“What kind of trick? What did you do?" cried the young king- fisher.

"I dived Into the water Just as if I were catching a fish," replied Rattles. "I splashed the water up almost in his face. He was flying so fast that he went: right on for quite a long way before he could turn. I guess he knew it was use- less to try again because I could do the same trick right. over again. It is a trick to remember. But you ran‘t play that trick and be afraid of the water."

Touslehead thought this over, but said nothing. However. Rattles knew that Tousleliead would re- member the trick.
