A Liverary Treat.—The lecture given last evening by Rev. Mr. Moss was a rare literary treat, and was followed with the closest attention by a large audience. The lecture was under the auspices of the Epworth League of Grace Church, and the subject was “Wordsworth’s Conception of Human Nature.” The jecture through- out was bighlv edifving and most instra:- tive. Rev. Mr. Kirby presided, and the lecturer wat tendere! a hearty vote of thanks at the close of his discourse.

Mr. Ross ar ScmMersipe.—A_ corres- pondent at Summerside writes : “Notwith- standing the very disagreeable weather quite a respectable audievee greeted Mr. John Koss in Market Hall, Summerside, on Monday evening when he delivered his new lecture “Ti.e Tenant League.” Mr. Ross dealt quite fully with the tenant movement in all its various phases, at times becoming truly eloquent. At the close of the lecture a vote of thanks was moved by Mr. McNally, an old tenant Jeaguer, and seconded by J. D. Enman. An idea of the appreciation of the audience was expressed by exacting a promise from Mr. Ross to again deliver nis very excellent lecture when we hope the weather will be more favorable.

Serine 1x Enciranp.—In England, ac- cording to the London Times of the 19th of last month, the season was quite as far advanced as at that date last year, judging at least from the native Flora. The marsh marigold was imparting brilliancy to “the swamps and hollows gray”; the dainty little mosebate] had opened its quaint bead of pale flowers, and the black bud-scales of the ash head fal'en ancrt, revealing a wealth of purple antlers. The honey suckle, the alder andthe wayfaring-tree were in Jeaf, as was a'so the white thorn and the heaye row Uriara, while the hora- beams and maples had broken their bud-.

I—In the last nomlcr of the Navy and Army mention is made that the 29th Foot, now the Ist Batallion Worcestershire Regiment is nicknamed “The Ever Sworded Twenty Ninth.” be- canse for anumber of years the officers always sat at mess with their swords belted on. This custom arose from the fact that when a part of the regiment was quartered in St. John’s Island iu the eighteenth century, they were all surprised, when unarmed, and slaughtered in. the most treacherous manner by Indians, hounded on by the French. Abont forty vears ago the custom was so modified in that only the captain and subaltern of the day dined at mess armed with their4 swords. At the present time this is still carried on.

trea! correspondent writes: The annual convocation for the conferring of degrees in the medical faculty of McGill Univer- sity, Montreal, was held on April 2nd. Among the successful candidates for the degree of M. D., C. M., are those of five of our Island boyz. They are: Messrs. W. Johnston, Charlottetown; J. B. Trainor Keliy’s Cross; J. A. Johnson, Emerald; G P. McDougall, Grand River; and W. P McNally, Abram’s Village. The high standing taken by the eeveral gentlemen in their class is praiseworthy. In a class of 85 J. B. Trainor takes third place in Ophalmology, and J. A. Johnston ranks fourth in Obstetrics. Johnson also wins first-class honors in Surgery and Ophal- mology, while Trainor in addition to the above isan honor man in Gynecology, W. Johnston holds a like position in Prac— tical Pathology and Obstetrics. The names of W. P. McNally and G. P. Me- Dougal! are likewise high on the houor list.

TROOPS FOR ENGLAND. The acjatante of the Artillery, Engineers and 82nd Battalion have received a circular letter, from which we sre enabled to clip the following: Brigade Office, Montrea!, 2nd April, 1897.
Sir,—It is probable that a small bat- talion of picked men from the different corps of the active militia of Canada will go to England abovt the lst of June next to take part in the ceremonies in connec- tion with Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.

Contributions, how- ever, have been promised, which will reluce the average to $50 per man. The expenses of the expedition to be borne by the contingent have been estimated and divided as follows: Captains, $400; Lieut- enants, $300. 2nd Lieutenants, $300; N. C. Otticers, $60; and men, $5).
The rates are intended to cover mainten- ance, throughout the trip, as provided for Imperial troops, from Montreal to England and return.
This contingent is to be distine 1; repre- sentative of the country and force, and will, therefore, be composed of officers and men from the various battalions through - out the Dominion.
Applicants must be between the ages of 20 and 35 years, not less than 5 feet & inches in height, and 37 inches chest measurement at normal inspiration.

ST. JOHN LODGE “AT HOME.”
The “at home” under the auspice; of St Joha Lodge, I. O. G. T. last evening was a distinct succese. There were about 150 guests present, and the hall was appropri= xtely draped and decorated for the occa- siot. Mr. G. Dudley Wright, Chief Templar, pr.ciced with much acesptarce. Addresses appropriate to the occasion w. re delivered by Rev. G. M. Campbell and Meerre, Geo. Irving and F. B. McRae, all of which were greatly appreciated, Inter, eating readings were given by Miss Fio McKenzie, Miss Holbrook and Rev. C. W. Corey, and the musical portion of the programme included a vocal solo by Mr. J... Davison, a cornet duet by Miss Welsh and Mr. W. Cook, and a quartette by Messrs. Davison, Turner, Moore and Davison. Refreshments were discussed ai the close of the literary and musical portion of the programme, and when the hour for parting arrived, which it did all too quickly, all felt that an evening of rare enjoyment had been passed.
