The Cadre is the official newspaper of the UPEI Student Union. 2,000 copies of The Cadre are printed 10 times per semester. There are meetings open to anyone Mondays at 5:00 in Main 06. The deadline for submissions is Friday at 5:00 PM.

Editorial 20: Apologies, Corrections and Farewells

This year of The Cadre will end the way it began: with a list. E

1. It is almost finished, again, for the twenti- eth time, which is incredible every time I think about it. I will miss this place — the stacks of newspapers and cases of empty pop bottles, the hum of the vending machines and the flourescent lights, the energy and enthusi- asm, and all the good people.

2. I am done pacing the office for the moment. I have fought off the urge to flee Main building, and leave all of this to Jeff and Stephan: the wrap-up, the end, the big finish. I could leave Jeff in charge — pretend he has- n’t been running the show for years already.

3. Correction: Cadre #5 was not published on October 10th, because Cadre #4 was pub- lished on October 10th. Cadre #5 was pub- lished on October 17th. We forgot to change the date. It happens.

4. If you have enjoyed/disliked The Cadre, thank these volunteers who selflessly donated their time and effort for just slightly less reimbursement than the staff received: A. 5. Correction: The second editorial titled Editorial 5, should of course be titled Editorial 6. The Cadre can write, but we have trouble counting. There is no Editorial 1] or 19. Intentionally.

6. To the person who apparently said we write The Cadre for ourselves: We wish.

7. Being the person nominally in charge of The Cadre has been an honour. To have been part of the creation of twenty issues of a stu- dent newspaper comprised entirely of origi- nal content — a feat matched by very, very few other student newspapers — has been both the best part of my university career (and also, occasionally, the worst part, and less freques- ntly, both best and worst simultaneously).

8. Correction: A few words were misspelled, but then, on the other hand, most were not. Most of the apostrophes didn’t disappear upon printing this year. (Also, there was a lot less cussing this year. Not intentionally or anything, but still, someone must be pleased.)

9. I will not miss the occasional anxiety attack, the deadlines, the few perplexing peo- ple who offer criticism without actually read- ing The Cadre. 1 will not miss getting paid less than I did when I was fifteen years old and made minimum wage.

10. I will miss UPEI and all the good people here very much. Thanks to: every single vol- unteer listed above, and especially to: Jeff Coll, Stephan MacLeod, Kim Tran, Heather Love, Cara Hedefine, Mr. Christie’s Peanut Butter Chips Ahoy!, Joel Meggs, Marc MacDonald, Kelly Gruber, Brad Deighan, Tom Lloyd, Marieve MacGregor, my dad, my mom, my step-mom, Kent Bruyneel, Lesley- Anne Bourne, Richard Lemm, Bill Matthews, Catherine Sweet, Thursday, Jonah Campbell, Steven Yates, Erin Fagan and Adam Gauthier.

12. Thanks to everyone who took the time to give me their opinion of The Cadre. The vast majority of reaction to The Cadre was posi- tive, which is always flattering, but thankful- ly, I heard criticism and disagreement as well. While not always as pleasant, people’s com- plaints are almost always more useful. A newspaper that no-one disagrees with, or has an opinion about, is a newspaper that no-one is reading, or that is simply unable to tell any of its readers anything new.

13. This year of the Cadre was the best ever. Especially the first semester’s issues. The second semester’s run was good, great even, but the first was astonishingly good, more consistent, more humble.

14. The Cadre’s most popular feature this year was probably Tom Lloyd’s “Holy Crap!” series on parking. I don’t know what that says about you, or us, but it means something. Something profound, I’m sure.

15. For whatever reason - laziness, most like- ly - I never told you to go to The Formosa House (Uni. Ave. next to The Reading Well) or to Eddie’s Lunch (corner of Prince and King). You really should — some of the best eats in Charlottetown.

16. Being Editor of The Cadre is the best job I’ve ever had. I got to work with great writ- ers, designers, editors, students, teachers, people. Also, I was allowed to pretend I was

in charge.
