: nd, the UPEI Theatre — Society held its production of Sex, Love and Infidelity at the Steele Recital Hall, and from what I saw on Friday night, it seemed to be a success. The audience was quite entertained and amused with the three comedies in this production, and the actors gave lively performances. _

As is probably obvious from the title, the themes of the three plays revolved around such things as love, romantic entanglements and the like. The first play, Moliere’s Sganarelle, was the most fun. It starts out with a young woman who is | about to be forced by her family into an arranged marriage, even though she has a love for someone else, but through a bizarre set of circumstances, it soon becomes a story where all the characters are involved in mistaken identity and jealousy.

The next play, Bowman’ s Salve

Resiia, seemed,to me anyway, to be rather dark when you compare it to the other two

_ plays. This was about four survivors of a

nuclear war, including a self-professed queen, her two servants and a female survivor from a United Nations rounda- bout. Among other things, the play involves what happens when all moral structure is thrown out and the characters have nothing else to do but engage in petty squabbles. This still was quite a good play.

The final play, Shaw’s Overruled, is about what happens when two couples discover their infidelities with each other ona cruise ship. This was a pretty funny play, quite upbeat given the subject matter, and it also had an amusing ending. It | concentrated much more on character development than in silly situations, giving play more depth.

Overall, the production made for an entertaining evening and hopefully the Theatre Society will match this efforts next

The general public is invited to a celebration of L. M. Montgomery’s birthday on Thursday, November 30, 1995, at 7:30 pm in the Pope Room of the Coles Building on Richmond Street, Charlottetown.

“*L.M. Montgomery’s novel, Anne of Green Gables, is famous on Prince Edward Island and indeed around the world. But how much do people know about L.M. Montgomery herself?’’ say members of the organizing committee. ‘‘We feel it is time to celebrate L. M. Montgomery as a person and Islander in her own right. Since L. M. Montgomery was born on November 30, we feel it an appropriate day to recognize publicly the woman who has made such an important contribution to Prince Edward Island through her writing.”’

Montgomery scholar Dr. Francis W. P. Bolger will give a talk on the life and times of L. M. Montgomery, and Jennie Macneill, of Cavendish, will read selected

Montgomery's Birthday Planned

pieces from the author’s journals. Birthday cake and coffee will be served. “‘The Island Hymn’’, written by L. M. Montgomery in 1908, will be sung.

Everyone is welcome to attend this celebration of Prince Edward Island’s most famous and beloved author. Admission is free. The birthday celebration is co- sponsored by the L. M. Montgomery Heritage Society and the L. M. Montgomery Institute.

The L. M. Montgomery Heritage Society, officially established in 1993, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of L. M. Montgomery’s heritage on Prince Edward Island. The L. M. Montgomery Institute, established in 1993 at the University of Prince Edward Island, pays tribute to Montgomery’s achievement and provides a centre for the research focused on Montgomery’s works, career, life, and Island home.
