A young hen lays a larger litter than the cld hen. The first and second years of a ken’s life are the most pro- ductive of eggs. How unprofitable, then, to kill off the young fowls and leave the aged ones.
A writer on poultry topics says a hen long in neck, and legs, prominent in breast, deep behind, flesh hard and muscular, rather above the average size of the breed, of lively disposition but not easily frightened, larger eater, and always hungry, makes the best layer.

roam and forage for themselves, and }
those which are fed regularly on good, nutritious food, as there is between a leg of Southdown mutton and that of a common, half-starved sheep.— “A Few Hens.”
A Distinction.
Farmers who read and keep posted on the progress of their occupation and endeavor to adopt improvements as soon as they come within reach, should bear in mind that all that is written or declared, while it may be appropriate enough in some cases, does not apply to their condition. We are thinking now of the advice in regard to pastures. In sections where the farm is all capa— ble of being plowed and cultivated, methods may be employed that cannot be followed where all the land that has been cleared of rocks is needed every year for the production of farm crors for market and for winter use.
