The most right thinking men of the sev- eral districts through which he travelled, consider it would be better for this barn collector to stay at home, take off his coat, and earn his living by the sweat of his brow, as it was designed for him to do. A public meeting was held recently in Aberdeen, presided over by the Marquis of Huntley, Lord Rector of the city Univer- sity, in the interest of a monument to be erected to the memory of the late Profes- sor Robertson Smith. The particular object of the memorial is to express the sense entertained of Prof. Robertson Smith’s intellectual eminence-as a Semitic scholar, and the impulse whieh he gxve to Semitic studies, particularly in Scotland. One of the notable circumstances connect- ed with this movement is the fact that it is endorsed by Free Church scholars and professors, and yet only a few years ago the Free Church of Scotland was vigor- ously at work driving the late professor beyond its pale, because of the views which he maintained on +ome important questions.
