who have a claim to the lands, but certainly these islands are of top national park quality. They are world-class virgin areas, and just as people from all over the world, including many Canadians, worked to save significant areas of virgin Redwoods in California, so now people from many countries are asking you to take action to preserve the for- ests of Meares and South Moresby.

UPDATE FIELD CHECKLIST

The Island Nature Trust has received federal government winter Works Funds to update the field checklist of birds found in the province. The checklist , an 8-page booklet listing all bird species found in the province with their seasonal and breeding status, is a valuable guide to Island residents and visitors interested in birds.

Geoff Hogan, an authority on Island Birdlife, has been hired to complete the project. The revised checklist will be printed by the Department of Transportation and Public Works.

Mr. HOgan indicated that "since the checklist was last updated in 1978, at least 14 new species have been reported on PEI and the abund— ance and distribution of many existing species is better known. Pre— sently more than 280 species of birds have been recorded from PEI and, with the increased interest in birds in recent years by Island resi— dents, there is a growing knowledge about the ISland's birdlife. Any- one who is interested in recent bird sighting or who has sightings to report is encouraged to contact me."

In addition to its mandate to protect natural areas, the Island Nature Trust is involved in a variety of educational programs to in- form Islanders about their unique natural environment.
