Sir,—I am somewhat surprised that the learned editor of the Pioneer, who so urg- ently and eloquently enlarges on the ad- vantages of Free Trade, does not devote some of his arguments to the enlightening of his friends and allies on the other side of the border. In an article in his publi- cation, a few weeks ago, he enlarged on their pri osperity. He does not call them ‘** bloated,” reserving that favorite epithet for the manufacturers and coal-owners of the Dominion, who have not the advant- ages of protective duties or bounties. No doubt his acquaintance with the works of Adam Smith and Stuart Mills, on pelitical economy, would enable him to produce conclusive arguments to persuade the poli- ticians of the States to change their policy. We find him also boasting repeatedly of the great superiority of the lands owned by the States of the Republic over those of the Dominion. There is no question but Minnesota, Dakota, ete., offer many excel- lent homes for emigrants, and the authori- ties of these States deserve great credit for their enterprize in opening the means of access to them. Many persons going from here, influenced by this, wish also to joim relatives who have gone before them and are prospering. The Dominion as at length woke up to the knowledge of its possessions in the Far West, and is follow- ing in the steps of its more powerful ao bor. It does not employ ‘ bloaters,” we find is sometimes done by land or a way operatives, according to the report of one of the English delegates ; nor does it need emissaries in the shape of venal news- paper editors. In one word, all it needs, and all the Liberal Conservatives ask for, is ‘fair play and no favor.”—In other words, Reciprocity.

Dear Sizx,—The information given by you last week, under the head of ‘*‘ The Interest Question,” is of # most important and gratifying character. It is under- atood, I am informed, that some cases are shortly to be brought before our Island Courts, in which the rule of law will be cited—and no doubt followed—laid down recently by the highest LDritish Court in the world, that parties obtaining money by charging compound interest, are liable to the borrower for the amount se obtained, even after a settlement.

The Dowinion Goverament will certainly be entitled to the gratitude of the inhabit-

ants of this Island if a limit will be placed on the greed and rapasity of some of our money-lenders.
