The children were as whist as mice in a cheese. Mrs. Sampson absolutely. kept her word, and, though the neighbours pitied the children and talked mournfully ofthe sorrows of poor Mr. Sampson, from that time he began to gain in ﬂesh and spirits, and became the sturdy good natured sort ofa man I had formerly known him. The recurrence of the old stimulus in the activity ofa wife’s tongue had restored the buoyancy to his spirits and health to his bones.

Such being the fact, [thought it best to write his history, in the hope that persons witnessing a, similar case would suspend their sympathies and reﬂect that, after all, the husband of a scolding wife may be as happy as that ofa good natured one, and the spirited tones of her voice in scolding may be quite as agreeable to such a husband's car as the most dulcet notes of the other in a triﬂing and fashionable air.

Mr.Roper himselfhas been unable from illne-s to leave his house for some time past,except on crutch— es, and Mrs. Roi er asserts that nei- ther her children nor any person be- longing to the house. had taken lights in or near the premises for some time previous. This is the-third time their barn has been burnt. and twice under suspicious circumstances. As it is believed that this diabolical de- prcdation has been the act of an in- cendiary, it behoves every person in the community who ‘respecta the laws, to use every exertion to fer- ret out so ﬁendish a character, and if reward will bring to light the per- petrator, oﬂ'er such a sum as will have the desired eﬂ'ect.—1bid.

Launcusn.—On Tuesday the 96th ultitno, frotn the Shipyard of Messrs. Campbell, Lot l6, a ﬁne Schooner called the “ Zephina,” of 120 tons. She was launched by 90 span of horses for the distance of 300 yards on the ice, which they accomplished in a few tninutee.

“ The Oregon question we do not believe to be capable of any settle- ment by treaty; and therefore neither honour nor usefulness will probably accompany any efforts for this pur- pose.. The rebel- lion embraces people of all colours, and so many arrests had taken place that the various prisons were crowd- ed, and an additional house had been taken near the river as a temporary jail. The arrests were still going on at the date ofthe letter. The city was in a state of great excitement attd business almost entirely suspended.
