**Financial wreckage strews our native shores, Protection’s storm of ruin rages, Our Island boys the ex'dus swell by scores, Aad roam afar for better wages. —Grit LAMENTATIONS.

Ever since the close of the halcyon days when McKenzie held the reigus ot government at Ottawa, and the castle of indolence formed a Refugium Peccatorum tor the political failures of the Island section of the party led by him, tbe con- gregation of incapables has been singing the above stanza. One by one the Grit demagogues have taken up the strains of woe and desolatiou, and stood at the street corners covered with political sackcloth and ashes, howling over the ruin of our industries, while their re- presentatives have caught up the chorus, and, in their places in Parliament, almost continually harped upon that one strivg Every business failure, every sign of depression, every Suspension of a manu- facturing industry, is greeted by them with shouts of ecstatic delight. Were the whole business fabric of the country to tumble down, and every manufactory to close its doors, the Grit leaders would climb to the summit of the ruins, aud dance upon the wreckage in transports of frenzied joy.

Let us examine carefully the follow- ing tabular statement of wages paid during the McKenzie regime, compared with those paid at the present time ; let us make the same comparison in the cost to the consumer of the necessaries of life, and see on what a rotten founda- tion the Grit platform is built, and how groundless are their wailings :

We might go on ad infinitum, but the above is sufficient to dispel the free trade mist that gathers on the eyes of those who have set their hearts against the policy that binds up the country and gives employment to its workingmen. With facts such as these, free traders dare not deal. In their hypocritical mauner, they shout *“‘woif! wolf!” when there is no wolf; they bluster about in a desultory way, and stir up prejudice, and side issues, and false principles ; they delight in theories; but when it come down to hard, practical every day work, their pet theories are exploded, and their dreamings are broken ; they become like mariners who have Jost their reckoning, their charts, and their compass. they are creatures of circumstances; and must trust to fortune to bring them to port.

An Important Statement.

At its last meeting, the President of the British Association said that he had anu important arrangement to make. He had * received a cablegcam from Sidney, from Prof. Liversedge, announcing that Mr. Caidwell, the Balfour student, who was sent out to Australia to investigate many of the mysteries in connection with the mammals of that country, had is- covered that the monotremes were ovi- parous. He did not consider that a more imporiant telegram, in a scientific sense, had ever passed through the sub-

marine cables before. The mono- tremes were of two kinds, the duck-billed platibus, that — extra- ordisary animal, and another ani-

mai which was known to the Australians asthe apt-eater. ‘These were the lowest forms of mammals,and it had never been kuown how they produced their young. The extraordinary discovery was now made that this m mmal laid eggs, and that the development of these bore a re- semblance to the development of the eggs of the reptilia than with the amphibia. This will be news for our naturalists !”

—Hop. Alexander McKenzie, after examining the “experimentel farms” has withdrawn the opinion he gave some time ago, that the Northwest countr , west of Moosejaw, is not fertile, and, in- ferentially, approved of the change iu the line of the Canada Pacific Railway which Mr. Blake denounces.

—We are assured that the statement contained in Mr. M. W. Murphy s letter, published in Tue Examiner on Saturday, respecting Mr. L. H. Davies, M. P., is untrue. It was, certainly, unuvecessary.

The Poor Provinces Must Go.

(Halifax Herald.)

The Hamilton Times, the ablest Grit paper in Ontario, argues that the heavy burdens of the Dominion expenditure fall upon Ontario. It gives figures to show ‘that while Ontario has 44 per cent. of the population, and contributes more than 44 per cent. of the revenue, oaly 30 per cent. of the expenditure for public works since confederation has been made in Ontario. The Times claims that Ontario paid $20,000,000 that was expemled in other provinces, Nova Scotia amoung the rest, and complains of ‘‘the tendency of the smaller and poorer provinces to make a fuss in order to get larger grants from the Dominion treasury—that is from Ontario.” If the party represented by the Hamilton Times and the framers of the Simcoe reso- lutions were by any accident to become the

ruling party in Cenada, we © can easily see how it would go with the “smaller and poorer provinces.” The

expenditure in the Marime Provinces would be cut down. Local railways would receive no more subsidies and the fishing bounty would be abolished. Blake, Mills, Cartwright,and Cookjwould be obliged to do this in order to preserve their strength in Ontario. Mowat has strong opinions on this matter, and Mowat has more influence than any other ten of Sir John’s opponents, Blake, included.

Forrone is fickle, lest success should beget pride. The match with New Girsgow was in some poiots the reversal of that with Pictou. It resulted in a draw in favor of che New Glasgow team, or rather the New Glasgow - Scellarton - Antigonish - Westville team, for the eleven who composed it were drawn from these four sources. The wick- ets were pitched on the same undulating crease as on the day before. It had not been watered or rolled or pounded. Water has to be carted to the grounds up a steep hill; and the difficulty of doing so was made an excuse for the neglect.” Capt. Hobkirk avain won the tess, and sent the combined eleven to the bat. Wyatt and Longworth sill bowling. The bad pitch made wickets nard to get, and the failure to hold catches vave two or three lives to the best scorers. Gregory, who was missed at square-leg with 2, afterward ran up 19 and other batsmen were equally lucky. Some fif y scored before a bye was obtained, Carvell on bovh days having done magnifi- ent work at the wickets. Runs were added steadily, until a total of 128 was reached, the bowling being not so fine or effective as ou the preceding day. After lunch, LePage ind Carvell went to wickets, and on the seventh over, the former was caught at long on. The bowling of Jackson, au Englishman, who, from a child, has been a desciple of cricket, was well on the stumps, and, such was the ground, his balls either shot or broke high, in which case the bat- handle or the hips or jaw bene were found where the bat should have been. The bowling of Kirwan was not difticuli to play, and on a level ground, would have pro- duced many rans. As it was almost the, only method of scoring runs ws the perfectly honest way of steaing them, and the run- ning of Longworth, till he retired hurt, was beyond all praise. A much padded wicket-keeper and two longstops were nnavailing, Even a_ ball blocked dead, gave a run, and at one time the field was so excited as to be almost dis- organized. With the fall of Wyatt, how- ever, who was nicely caught at long leg by

Aiter a short interval the Charlottetown boys followed on, and Weeks was im- mediately canght at short slip bya break up ball from Jackson, 1 for 0. The fielders in ne instance declined any of these offers, and in that lay their superiority. Longworth followed and scored 15, not out, and with Bourke and Juhnson ran up a large number of extras in a very few overs. Game was called at 5 o’clock, 6 out for 46. Being a two-innings match, the game is technically a draw. On the whole, the Island team came home with an even rec rd, having learnt the necessity of better catching and steadier batting, especialiy on such a crease, which lessons may yet be ot more worth to them than a victory might have been :—
