Tae Deapty Cycions.--One day last week a cyclone swept over the states of lowa, Mis- souri, Kansas and I[liinois, and the papers at hand this morning contain lengthy accounts of the resulte. Whole towns and villages were destroyed, and many persons were killed; barns and fences were levelled and there is ruin on every hand. We have no euch lux- uries as this in Canada.

Crry AssessMENT.—The city assessors, Messrs. ©'Cailaghan, Davy and Martin, have completed their work and handed over their books to the City Clerk. Their re- turns show an increase of $32.000 in real estate and a decrease of $28,000 in personal property. The decrease in the value of personal property is the result of the recent fires and of several firms having gone out of business.

First Arrivals. —On Friday «fternoon last the steamer St. Olaf steamed into Souris har bor on her way to the Magdalen Islands. She remained there a few hours and started out again to finish her trip, but it is not likely the can reach her des instion this time, as northeasterly winds setting in soon after she left, will block the way with ice, if there is any at all left in the gulf. The schooner Eddie, of Rustico, arrived at the same port on the day following. These are the two first arrivals at Souris this spring.

Firs Apparatus Testeo.—The new im- proved controlling nezziea and play pipes recently imported by the Fire Department from the Gutta Percha and Rubber Manu- facturing Company, Toronto, were tested this forenoon and the result was very satis factory. By means of these nozzles the pipeman can easily regulate the size of the stream and make it anywhere from the size of a straw to an inch and a quarter. They throw the largest stream fully higher than the old nozzles, and are much easier on the hose as the shut-off is more gradual.
