A vispatcu from St. John’s, N’fld, says: “The condition of the people at Bruin and genet around the Bay is deplorable. The

estitution is more prevalent and intense than for the last twelve years.”

Tue “Sun” says: “On Thursday last Messrs. Gunter & Co., of St. John, shipped to the New York market 1,114 bbls. of po- tatoes. This was perhaps, the most notice- able feature in the week’s business.”

Lecrure.——Mr. Hoyt’s lecture on “ Suc- cess,” postponed on account of the storm, will be delivered in the ‘‘ Atheneum” next Friday evening. Doors open at 7.30 ; Jecture to commence at 8 o’clock. Admis- sion, 10 cents.

Tue funeral of the late W. B. Allin took place from his residence to Sherwood Ceme- tery at 2.30 p.m., to-day. The Lodges of Free Masons, Oddfellows, and the Hook and Ledder Co., attended in very large numbers. Mr. Allin was one of the Charter Memhers of St. Lawrence Lodge, L. O. O. F.

A roune man named Dorisey met with a terrible death at Bett’s Cove, N’fid. He had pains in his back and was stitching a flannel round him saturated with spirits of turpentine. He applied matches to sever the thread, which fired the spirits. He was badly burned, and lingered 24 hours in heart-rending agony.

Mr. E. F. CLements, local manager of the steamer *‘ Dominion,” of Yarmouth, N. S., has steamer ‘‘ Alpha’ from parties in this Island. The St. John Telegraph says the ‘‘ Alpha” will doubtless be used as a passenger and freight boat between Yarmouth

and adjacent ports to the shore line.

Damsitgsit O'Leary, John Ennis, Charles Rowell, of London, and C. A. Harriman, of Boston, have made arrangements for an in- ternational walking match on the 10th of March. Bets are 2 to 3 against O'Leary ; 2 to l against Rowell; 2to1l and 3 to 1 against

‘Harriman ; and Sto Land 10 to 1 against ' Ennis.

A Truckman had a narrow escape from being crushed to death on Water Street to day. While passing one of the deep pitches —for which many of our streets are notable —with a hogshead of molasses on his sleigh, the rope which bound the hogshead broke, and it rolled towards him and struck te ower part of the shafts with a heavy crash.

- Had it not been for his agility in leaving its way he would be, doubtless, crashed to death.

Tue Department of Marine and Fisheries is negotiating with a Newfoundland whaling and sealing firm, with a view to anaing the practi- eability of the navigation of Hudson Bay to Port Nelson during the summer months. It is understood from late information that the navigation is practicable up to the end of No- ae and as Surveyor General Dennis’ re- port showed that, for a series of years, it opened as early as June, there would seem to be little doubt of the practicability of the route for commercial purpuses for at least four months in the season.

An important judgment was given in the Supreme Court of Halifax on Saturday, in the case of Kenney vs. the City of Hali- fax, which established that the city has no right to tax shipping property owned by citizens of Halifax but registered at country

Tue train which left this city for Tignish this morning, ran oft the track after passing County Line. The snow plough, two loco- motives, a flanger and one car, are very ‘‘badly off.” We learn that the flanger and the car which followed it are totally destroyed. The locomotives are but slightly damaged. No accident are reported to the train hands, save one of the engineers who had his hands cut. The cause of the accident is as yet unknown ; but it is supposed that the snow plough which

The House went into Committee of the Whole on the North West Mounted Police Bull.

Mr. Mackenzie pointed out that the clauses authorizing the employment of ten supernumeries and ten scouts, gave the Government power to increase the force by twenty men.

Sir John urged the necessity of the Govern- ment having power to increase the force to 500 men in emergencies. He praised the force, and said there were 800 applications for 70 pros pective vacancies, Many of the applicants be- ing gentlemen’s sons.

Mr. Cartwright urged the necessity of keep- ing a sbarp watch over Indian Agents and the Police, for the purpose of preventing the pos- sibility of an Indian war.

The Times says that news from France is much to be lamented. The Cabinet has sev- erely damaged and lost its position in the Chambers. The consequence may not merely be a fall of the Ministry, but a revival of con- fusion and weakness, which may tend to par- alyze the French Government and lower the influence of France abroad. England relies on the co-operation of France in the whole course of Eastern affairs, whether by the action of Russia or otherwise.

A London dispatch says :—‘‘The vessel re-

ported as having been brought into Kilrush harbor, Ireland, bottom up, is the British brig Jessie McLeod, Capt. Mclvor, from Charlotte- town, P. E. 1, for Queenstown.” The Jessie McLeod is owned by Capt. McLeod of Orwell. She sailed from this port on the 12th of De- cember with a cargo of oats, bound to Queens- town for orders. It is supposed that the eargo shifted during a heavy gale off the Irish coast; that she turned bottom up and that the crew are all lost. The captain—Donald Mclvor—belongs to Point Prim. Hugh Me- Dougal, the mate, isa native of Edinburgh. Lawrence Peterson, cook, is a native of Nor- way. Francis Murree, seaman, belongs to Magdalen Islands. John Naftell, Henry Tonburg and C. Chusieman belong to Gurnesy, and Henry Elliot to London.

Died. At Montague, on the 19th February, Bridget Dreelan, aged 55 years. May she
