After death an operation was performed by Dr. Vincellette upon the body to establish the exact nature of the disease, when a kind of sac or bag containing 13 gal- lons of watery matter and weighing 130 pounds was taken from the ab- domen. 15 tumors, two of which were ovarian and about the size of an egg. This disease is said to have been unknown to the profession until the the present Madame;Plante had been ailing for two years, and at the time of her death her frame was literally nothing but skin and bones.
A correspondent mentions a source of danger in the use of kerosene lamps which scems to have been generally overlooked, namely, the habit allowing lamps to stand near hot stoves on, mantelpicces, and in other places where they become heated sufficiently to con- vert theoilinto gas. Notunfrequently persons engaged in cooking or other work about the stove will stand the lamp on an adjacent mantelpiece, or even on the top of a raised oven; or when ironing will set the lamp near tho stand on which tho heated iron rests. It is needless to enlarge upon the risky character of such practices,
