Men's Puck Panthers Season Comes To A Halt

Our Panthers looked strong as they broke out for a huge offensive night picking up a 6-5 win, putting Dalhousie in a very tight spot returning home for a do or die matchup. But being down 1-0 in the best of three series did- n't have much effect on the intensity the Tigers brought to the ice. Despite a valiant effort from UPEI, the boys were on the short end of a 2-1 deci- sion. The next day the Panthers took to the ice in a game that would decide their fate for the remainder of the season. A loss and they were gone, a vic- tory and they would have a few days to prepare for round two. Unfortunately, the foremost ensued as the panthers dropped a tough fought battle 3-2.

With the season now complete for the men's puck panthers, they will look to next year for redemption and another shot at the AUS crown. Here are a few stats on the 2003/2004 UPEI Men's Hockey Panthers.

Mother Nature was on the side of the Panthers Volleyball team as they hosted the AUS Championships at UPEI. The recent snowfall condi- tions held the defending champions Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax longer than they expected as they were unable to make it to the Island until

2:00 Saturday morning. UPEI was -

waiting, well rested, and ready to play only eight hours later. Without their usual Friday practice, Dalhousie may have been taking the fifth ranked UPEI women a little lightly, and they paid the price for it as UPEI knocked them out of con- tention in a convincing, yet well earned 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21) decision.

Ashley Shannik was named player of the game for her efforts with 1 ace, 12 kills, and 14 digs. This victory marks the first ever playoff victory by the panthers and

they rode the adrenaline into their matchup against St. Mary's.

UPEI brought their "A" game to the AUS Semi-Finals as they took St. Mary's to a five game set. The Huskies defeated our Panthers 3-2 (16-25, 25-15, 25-20,

“25-18, 15-12) in a game that came

down to the final three points. The Panthers gave the AUS Champions by far their toughest match of the tournament as they played hard until the final rally against the #1 seeded Huskies.

The girls finished up their season with a very respectable record of 7-9 which is a definite improvement over last years 1-15. This past weekend the girls have made a name for UPEI Volleyball for future years to live up to.
