Men win while ladies lose to St. FX

he UPEI Lady Panthers were eager to 0% make up for their one point loss to Dalhousie on Friday when they faced off against St. FX on Sunday.

The first half saw both teams evenly matched, and at the half the score was close. In the second half, St. FX began to pull away. Their constant defensive pressure caused some problems for the Panthers.

The game was still in reach when UPEI shooters Quinn and Dickinson nailed, in total,

three three-point shots. In the end the St. FX team prevailed. The final score was St. FX 81, UPEI 71.

The UPEI Men’s team, after their victory over Dalhousie on Friday, took to the court after the ladies’ game. The Panthers faced the de- fending CIAU Champions, the St. FX X-Men. UPEI started off well and by half had mounted a 45-38 lead. The second half saw UPEI break away. Some excellent shooting and great defense paved the way to a UPEI victory. The final

score was UPEI 98, St. FX 73.

A note of thanks to the fans, who showed originality in their chants and managed to lead the spectators in a wave. Great spirit, guys!!

Notes: The Lady Panthers have two games at UNB (December 3 and 4) that will finish their pre-Christmas schedule. The Men’s team have no more games until the Mustang Annual Holi- day Tournament at the University of Western Ontario on December 29 and 30.

Hockey Panthers lose at home Panthers beaten by Blue Eagles, Tommies

their pre-Christmas schedule by losing their last three home games to finish the first half of the schedule with a record of 2-9-2. Last Wednesday at the Civic Centre, the Panthers hosted the MacAdam division-leading Moncton Blue Eagles. The game was the sec- ond of the year between these MacAdam divi- sion rivals. The two teams met in Moncton in October with the game ending in an 8-8 tie. On Wednesday, it looked as though the Panthers once again had their offensive game in gear. Moncton’s Frantz Bergevin kept the Panthers from winning easily, as they played their best offensive game of the year with numerous scor- ing chances throughout the game; however, Moncton capitalized on most of their own scor- ing chances and took a big 5-1 lead early in the final period.

UPEI did not quit and narrowed the score to 5-4 in the late stages of the game. The Panthers pulled goaltender Troy Barr with a minute left, but were unable to put any pressure on the Blue Eagles and instead allowed an empty-net goal, giving the Blue Eagles a 6-4 win.

On Saturday night, the Panthers tried their luck against the St. Thomas Tommies. They battled the Fredericton school to a 1-1 draw after the first period, but fell apart defensively in the second period and allowed four Tommies goals, including a short-handed effort, with the Panthers trailing 5-3 by the third period.

Goals by K.J. White and Ron Clough tied the score nine minutes into the period, but St. Thomas’ Craig Conohan took the puck from the face-off deep in the Panthers’ zone, skated in front of goalie Kevin MacDougall, and lifted a high backhander over the netminder’s glove for the winning goal. The Panthers pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and had a faceoff in the Tommies’ zone with four seconds left but couldn’t get the equalizer. The final score was 6-5.

On Sunday, also against the Tommies, the Panthers battled a hard-fought first period hold- ing St. Thomas to a 0-0 tie. But as was the case the night before, the Panthers fell apart defen- sively in the second period, allowing St. Thomas to put the game away with four goals. The Panthers ran out of steam and were unable to mount much pressure in the third. A goal by St. Thomas eighteen seconds into the period se- cured the victory, making the score 5-1. St. Thomas got their offence from five different goal scorers. UPEI’s lone goal came off the stick of captain K.J. White, on a breakaway.

UPEI’s frustration with the two weekend losses to St. Thomas, as well as a poor first half, showed in the third period as numerous fights and altercations broke out in the late stages of the game. Six fighting majors and eight game misconducts were handed out in the third period alone, which means many of UPEI’s players will start the New Year on suspension.
