E. L. Stewart, the seronaut, made an ascension at Fayette, Mo., on the 20th inst., in an old hotair balloon, which burst when it had attained a height of 2.000 feet. The balloon and wronaut came down with a rush, and plunged into a creek and disappeared. Stewart’s body was recovered. *

An extensive ffre occurred in the Royal Dockyard at Amsterdam, on the 20th inst. The man-of-war ‘ Doggerbaud” was destroyed, and the man-of-war ‘‘Korto- naer” was damaged. The loss is between 3,000,000 and 4,000,000 florins. A fire- man was killed and three other persons In- jured.

Mr. Healy, who intends to contest the vacancy in the representation of the County Monaghan in the House of Commons, has issued an address in which he says the caution of an occupying proprietory will final.y settle the Lend question. _Maton’s block, on Post street, San Fran- cisco, occupied by O'Connor & Moffat’s dry goods store and the Olympic Club, was burned on Wednesday last. The fire was the most disastrous that has occurred since the great lumber fire two years ago, for the firemen seemed to be entirely unable to check the flames. The building has long been known asa tinder box. Insurance companies rated it extra hazardous. At five o'clock the flames were under control, but the upper stories were a complete wreck. The building was valued at $150,- 000; O'Connor & Mboffat’s stock at $50,000 ; the Olympic Club’s property at $40,000, The loss is estimated at $507,000.
