Canada's imports Down for July

OTTAWA (CP) - Reduced pur- chases of a variety of iron and steel products. textiles and coal cut Canada's imports by l5.8 per cent in July. compared with the cor- responding month in 1953.

The bureau of statistics reported Friday the sixth monthly decrease in dollar value. 864,189,000. Im- ports from all countries last July fell to 3a4l,24d,000 lrom 1405.485.- 000

The import value in the first seven months was 32.391.358.000. a drop of 8.8 per cent from 82.621.- 908.000 in a similar period last year. The only monthly increase this year was in June when imports rose to s4l6,l00,000 from 34063900,- OOO in June. 1953.

Canada purchased less farm ma- chinery. motor vehicles and parts, engines. boilers, raw and finished textiles and fibres. and coal.

Australian Spy Probe Commissioners Name Author of Libellous "Document l"

IIYDNEY. Australia, (Reuters)- An Australian communist news- paper man. Rupert Dockwood. was the author of the llbellous "Docu- ment .1" handed to Australian se- curity agents by the former Soviet spy, Vladimir Petrov, the Austral- ian spy probe commission decided tonight.

It was the first decision an- nounced by the three commission- ers since they began hearings after Petrov's defection to the West last April with his wite.

Petrov was formerly the chief of the MVD (secret police) in the soviet embassy in Canberra, where he was first secretary.

Judge William Owen. the chair- man, said the commissions deci- sion over "Document J" absolves the.Commonwenlth security ser- vice from any suggestions of con- spiracy.

Herbert Evatt. leader of the Labor opposition, alleged when he appeared before the commission in defence of two of his staff that the document was a "fake".

The departure Friday was the culmination of almost a year's plan. ning which began when Kirkwood and Jim Hanney, 30, also an ex- newspaper man. advertised for "fellow adventurers" to share ex- penses on the trip they planned. Each of the six has a 900 in- vestment in the project. On arrival at La Guaira, chief port of Vene- zuela. they hope to establish a fish-carrying business.

The other crew members are Ron Hollick, 22, George Rackus. Geoff Buxion and Peter Scott.

There were 3.784 miles of pipe- line at the end of 1053. 1.204 miles more than at the end of 1950. the bureau of statistics reported Tuss- day.

The number of pumping stations rose to 45 from 33 during the year. and the flow or oil was stepped up to 151553.137 barrels from ioa,aia,- 688 in 1952.
