Destrorep.—The liquor seized from Felix Martin last week, was destroyed on Market Square by the policemen at twelve o'clock today. Just as the clock was striking twelve Sergeant Cameron besan breaking the bottles and jars with a hatchet, and in a few minutes the entire stock was running about the Square. The operation was witnessed by a large, good-natured crowd of people.

‘Twas Even Tavs.—A well known citizen, who is somewhat peculiar in his way has, at certain seasons, ‘‘ sworn off,” and kept away from his ** constituents” for various terms; Until this morning he waa on one of his tem- perance “‘ furloughs” and doing as well as might be expected. A friend happening to notice a slight rising of the mercury, accus: d him of indulgence. At first a denial was con- sidered only necessary; but it was followed by an admission that his brother was in town, and he ‘‘ took a few” so aa not to cause his beloved frater to think there was any- thing wrong. He will again form a “‘govern- ment whose power may remain until next Michaelmas.

Trans-Atlantic Mail Service.

Ottawa, Oct, 18, A sub-Committee of Council are consid- ering imperial despatches bearing on the preposed improvements in the Trans- Atlantic mail service. It is understood that the recent imperial subsidy of the Pacific steamers was granted on condition that the Canadian Government take mea- sures to improve the trans-utlantic service. It is rumored in London that the Canadian Pacitic contemplates establishing a mail service to Australia, provided the Imperial authorities give them the contract. They will undertake to convey the mails from Liverpvol to Brisbone in thirty-one days. To Found an Institute. Berurn, Oct. 18. The muni ipalities to-day presented the Empress Frederic «ith an address in grate- ful recognition of the Emperor Frederick’s eff.r s to develop the Ein; ire.
