What to Read.

However this question is decided, the newspaper cannot be excluded. First of all, every householder must take in a local journal, which public spirit and self. interest render alike essential to him. Without it, he is a stranger to all that goes on in his county, and cannot act the part of a good citizen. It is a primary duty, therefore, to subseribe to the local news- paper.

A Possiste SMattrox Case in Sr. Jon. — Considerable alarm was caused in the city yesterday by the report that a case of rmallpox had shown itself in a house oa ; Carmarthen street, at the corner of Lein | ster street. In order to ascertain the facts, a Velegraph representative called upon Dr, Bayard last evening. He was there in- formed that Dr. McLaren had reported the case to the Board of Health. Dr. Bayard, yesterday afternoon, visited the patient, who is an employee of the New Brunswick railway. The patient had heen vaccinated about a week ago, and has a bad arm as the result. He is also broken out witha ligit rash, which may or may not be pre- movitory symptome of smallpox. Wheiher it is or not will probably be determined by the progrens of the disease to-day. Similar appearances to those presented by the patient have, in rare cases, resulted from vaccination, and it was not thought advie- able at this stage to send the patient to the hospital. He has been isolated. Dr. Bay- ard expreased the opinion that no alarm need be felt, even if the case turns out to be one of simalipox, as the disease would no donbt be co fined and speedily stamped out. Over 8,000 persons had already been vaccinated in the city, some 2,000 by the free services of the Board of Health physi- cians and 6,000 by ether physicians in their private practice. The work of vaccinating the remaining population will be speedily dene hereafter by house to house vaceina- tion under the government regulations. — St. John Telegruph, Dee Sth.
