The Doctor will speak of what has been done to secure a firm basis on which to build the future greatness of Canada, and what we as Christians, as patriots, as philanthropists, owe to our sons and brothers and fellow-citizens among the prairies and mountains of our great Dominion.

SpeciaL Despatours to THe EXAMINER. Drummed Ont of the Regiment.

Frepericron, Oct. 30.

\ caremony took place in the barrack grounds to-day, the like of which the oldest citizen only remembers of having occurred once before and that was when H. M. 22nd Kegiment was stationed here. It was the drumming out of the Royal School of In- fautry of Private Nason. The full corps was called ouc aud in their presence Lieut. Col. Maunsel publicly expelled Nason, and in doing so briefly addressed them, regret- ting to take such a step and urging them to be soldiers in every sense of the word. Nason had been guilty of deserting two or three times and other unbecoming conduct.

What the Amendments Did.

Orrawa, Oct. 29. N. C. Wallace, M. P., promoter of the Act for the suppression of trade combina- tions, admits that amendments made to his bill last session in the Senate, rendered it quite useless, and he says that he will en- deavor to have the measure amended next session. Mr. Wallace thinks that if the bill had been passed in the form in which he introduced it, trusts and com-

bives could have been easily suppressed.

The St. Joseph Cannon-ball train of the Rock Island Road ran into the rear of the Denver express at Seneca last evening, wrecking the dining car on the Denver ex- press, and engine, tender, and baggage car of the St. Joseph train. Major T. C. Gib- sou, of this city, an unknown lady, and the encvineer of the St. Joseph train were quite Se erely Injured.

A Missionary Massacre.

Lonpon, Oct. 29.

Advizes from Brisbane state that the na- tives of south-west New Guinea have mass- ucred Rev. Mr. Savage, sent out by the London Missionary Society, also a number of native teachers, and the crew of the cutter Mary, belonging to the Society. The steamer Albatross, of the Queensland Gov- ernment has been despatched to the scene of the murder.

M., Oct. 29.—Mr. Cay- ley’s motion to abolish the dual language system in the North-west was carried to- day before a full house, only two members, Mitchell of Batouche, and Hoey of Kinis- tino, voting against it. Judge Roleau made an eloquent speech against the motion, but had no vote.

Lonpon, Oct. 29.—Chamberlain, speak- ing at a private caucus at Birmingham re- ferred to his desire to retire from political life. He said, considering the abuse heap- ed upon him, he had more than once re- fiected whether ‘* the game was worth the candle.” Ouly love of country induced him to continue in public life.

Orrawa, Oct. 29.--A prominent politi- cian just returned from the Rockies gives an interesting account of the success of the Cochrane ranche company. They started business with 6,000 head of cattle, of which they lost all but 500 the first year. The next year their losses had reached a quarter of a million dollars, but the past three years have been so successful that they have not only regained the amount lost, but paid the stockholders an amount equal to ten percent. per annum on capital, and placed $100,000 to reserve profit account.

Dus, Oct. 29.— Father MeFadden to-day pleaded guilty of obstructing the police at the time of the murder of Inspec- tor Martin, at Gweedore, in February, and he was liberated on his own recognizance, the government assenting to this dis posi- tion of the case.

Lonpon, Oct. 29.—Sir J. B. Lawes states the forecast of the British wheat crop must be considerably discounted. He puts the crop at a little over 8,000,000 quarters, and the amount required for consumption at 27,000,000. According to this the re- quirements will be higher than last year.
