Mevancnoty Catastrorae.—On Thursday, the 21st ult., D. J. Roberts, Esqr., of this City, together with Capt. Campbell, Capt. Hender- son, Messrs. Farady, Lewis, and another person whose name we have not been able to-ascertain, —in all six persons,—left Carriboo in a small open boat, for the purpose of crdéssing over to this Island. The current was, we understand, setting strongly to the north at the time, and a show-storm coming on soon after their depar- ture from Carriboo, there is too much reason to fear that the boat was swamped, and that all on board have perished with her! Hopes were for some days entertained that the party had } succeeded in reaching Pictou Island; but this | last faint hope was dissipated on Tuesday last, when a telegram was received intimating that up to that time the missing boat had not touched the Island. This is one of the most heart-rendiny calamities that has ever occurred in the Straits of Northumberland within our recollection. Four widows and twenty-two orphan children have thus fearfully and unexpectedly—and at a season of the year, too, when all is joy and fes- tivity around them — been plunged into the deepest distress, and called tomourn the loss of their nearest and dearest earthly relatives.
