We learn by the Nova Seotia Mail yesterday, that, at the meeting of the House of Assembly on the 26th instant, Mr. | Johnston's Government was defeated on the choice of a Speaker. The Ministry proposed Mr. Wade, member for Digby, to fill the Speaker's chair—the Opposition proposed Mr Stewart Campbel!,andhe waselected. There is no doubt that the career of the Johnston Administration is now at an end.

THE CHARLOTTETOWN ELECTION.

Tus election for Charlottetown, caused by Mr. Palmer's | resignation of his seat in the House of Assemhly, took place | yesterday, (the 30th); and as the Political Alliance frown | Gown all opposition to their decrees from members of the |

mot—no one had courage enough to oppose Mr. Beer, who | confesses that he was the nominee of the sceret society ; and | who must now be regarded as their member. It was in con-| templation, @ week or two ago, to bring Mr. N. Rankin for- ward, aud he would have made a very good member; bit the Alliance was too powerful for him and his friends, and they had to succumb. Many conservatives profess to be annoyed and disgusted with tue arrogance of the Alliance, in usurping the eleetive franchise for the City and Royalty within their own narrow circle; but if they have not spirit enough openly to resist the usurpation, they deserve to suffer it. As for the Liberals they do not intend to contest this rotten borough so long as the majurity of the electors appear afraid to call their souls theirown. Even if they could have got a member of their own in the House, at the present time, it would not have much improved their position there; and it is far better to wait for a general election, when the Tories can be easily routed in # large majority of the country districts. The pub- lie are already sickened of our present rulers, and they want only the opportunity to tell them to make place for batter men.

The election yesterday, we are informed, was a very dull affair. There was scarcely a sufficient number of people in and about the Court House to keep the Returning Officer and his Clerk from yawn ng over the int>resting proc -edings ; and vader !] ¢ discouraging circumstances the distinguished nominee of the Alliance deomed it best to reserve his oratory for the House of Assembly

Produce will be taken in payment, and time given to any good Farmer wanting one of those celebrated Cooking Stoves.

From the very general satisfaction they have given for the last two seasons, and the great demand for them all over the Island, which are now fast superseding all other kinds of Yankee Stoves; and as they only require about half the wood, labour and time of most other Stove:—such a revenue is equal to so much cash in the Farmer’s pocket, or Oats in bis barn. The large metal Boilers, which suit also to feed cattle in the Winter, make those Stoves still more valuable for cooking up all the barn waste, and the little time required to attend to them.

Any one that wishes to save moncy, and to keep a warm house for little trouble and cost, ought to have one of those extraordinary Stoves for 1860 in it, before they are all sold, which would clear its own cost in wood, labour and time be- fore three seasons are over. | ‘The following Agents have been appointed, and have re- |ecived nearly 300 of those almost everlasting, new and favour- ite Stoves, most of which have been sold, and not ene return- ed or found fault with. Reference can be given to all the parties who purchased them, on enquiry of any of the under- signed, and there is one in operation at the Orwell Agent's, where it can be seen at all times.
