LYNCHING STATISTICS.
The Buifs'o Express has been keeping @ record of the lvoching3 which bave oc- curred in the United States during the past year. It lately published a list of the events of chia kind which have been re- corded in its news column sinee June 8 last. This Jisi forms the second chapter of the Express’a history of this subject, the first record covering the period from Jan. 1 to June-8, 1897. In capitulating these instances of summary ‘* justice” which were noted duriog the first half of the last calendar year, the Express says: “The total footed up to thirty-eight. Of there twenty-two were for alleged murder; nine ffo> assault or attempted sseault on women, in two cares accompani- ed by murder;three for arson, one for writing anfinsinuating note to a white girl, one foreloping with a white girl, one eupposed to have taken part in @ riot, and ove admitted to have been a mistake.”
A summary of vhe record for the period of Jess than seven monthe ending Dec. 30 shows that inthat period seyenty-seven persons were made the viciims of mob violence In-one case the victim was killed by a mob of Mexicans, and was, apparent- ly, a Mexican himself. Tie list includes one white woman who was whipped to death (in Randolph county, Ark., for reasons which were not made clear. The offenses charged against the other vic- tims include assanit on women of child- ren, murder, robbery, horse and mule stealing, arson, shielding men wanted by mobs, giving evidence against whitecaps, wite beating, being a negro school teacher, teaching uegroes music, revenge OD & constable, and “general princip!es.” As will be supposed, criminal assault was the excuse for the large maj-rity of these lynchings, and the most of the offenders were colored men. Bat murder was also the cause for much of the mob vengeance, aud Lere again the colored victims were in the majority.

Tue Sranver arrived withia about two miles of Panmure Island last evening on her way te Georgetown, and remained in the ice there unti! this morning. Early this morning fifteen of her passengers, including Premier Warburton, W. S. McKie, R. M. Young and a number of Salvation Army officers left her and were driven to Georgetown from Paomure Island in time to connect with the train for Charlottetown. Subsequently the Stanley left for Souris, but was unable to get there because of ice, and put back to George- town. At latest accounts she was in the ice off Boughton Island, and teams had gone out for the fifty or sixty passengers oa board.
