The following bills were introduced :—

By Mr, Beatty—respecting the Commer- cial Travellers’ Association ef Canada.

By Mr. Gireuard—concerning marriage with a deceased wife’s sister.

Mr. Biake asked if it was the same as one introduced last year.

Mr.Girouard replied that it was not. The

| portion respecting marriage with a deceased

brother-in-law that had been eliminated. There was nothing in the bill that would (Laughter. ) Mr. Cameron introduced a bill to amend the criminal law, and to extend the provi- sions of the act respecting offences against the person, also a bill to provide that per- sons charged with misdemeanors shall be competent as witnesses. ,

Lonpon, Feb 16.

An explosion eccurred at Brindon Grande, Durham, to-day, in which 120 persons were imprisoned in the mine. Thirty imprisoned workmen were reseued. Foul gas, resulting from the, explosien, caused the death of four persons in another colliery two miles distant.

Mr, Gladstone entered the House of Commons at 10 o'clock this evening, and eloquently defended the Irish policy of the Government.

In the parliamentary election at Taun- ton, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sir Wm. Palliser, Mr. Allsopp, Conser- vative, was successful, securing 1,144 votes against 917 for Viscount Kilconisie, Liberal.
