A correspondent to the Chronicle says that the recent Y. M. C. A. convention at Truro a few weeks ago has had a wholesome effuet on the people generally. This will be admitted to be gratifying, as, whether rightly or wrongly, an impression generally prevails that Truro is no better than it should be. If the convention has had a purifying and elevating influence, al! true friends of morality will rejoice. Truro ought to he 2 good place. Nature has been prolific in her favor. The people are generally prosperous in the sense of possess- ing this world’s goods. Churches abound, Eloquent preachers are not scarce. But, according to many reports, the vital spirit of Christianity is absent.

The fertility of resource of the newspaper press of Winnipeg was strikingly illustrated by the publication last week of a circum- stantial telegraphic account of the English attack upon Arabi’s entrenchment, in which great valor was displayed by the Irish battalions who led the assault and who were cheered on by the Scotch regiments. In the affray the Irishmen were reported to have used their fists to good purpose in knocking down the Egyptians and then clubbing their brains out with the butts of their rifles. The whole story was con- cocted in the press rooms of the evening paper, and was published to see if the morn. ing paper would copy it. Theruse was not successful.

The Slaughter of the Beetle

A profouad sensation will be created in in- sect circles on the other side of the Atlantic, says the St James’ Gazette, of London, by the melancholy fate that has befallen the Colorado beetle digcoverod afew days ago secreted as a “stowaway” on board the Guion steamship Wisconsin at Liverpool. On the fact being reported to the Privy Council directions were given that the beetle should be at once put to death and its body forwarded to Whitehall for inspection. The sentence has no doubt by this time been carried out, and the remains of the beetle are probably at this very moment on their way to the Privy Council Office. It will, of course, be thought by many benevolent persous that the beetle has been bardly dea!t with. A sentence of :mprisonment for life would, it may be urged, bave met the justice of the case; and thé slanghter of the beetle in cold blood is a proceeding that cannot be justified eves on grounds of expediency. On the other hand, it may be taken for granted that the execution of the beetle was not de- cided on without. grave consideration. Its escape from confinement might have been attended by the most serious consequences, and even our present Ministry could hardly afford to adopt a policy of conciliation in deal- ing with Colorado beetles, ite. «
