NEWS AND NOTES

UPEI SCIENCE FAIR 1983. The annual High School Science Fair was held at UPEI in early April. This year there were no natural history entries at the senior high (grades 10—12) level, but Natural History Society judges found a high level of . interest and quality in natural history entries at the junior high (grades 7-9) and elementary (grades 4-6) levels. The following prizes were awarded: elemen- tary level, first prize - Sarah Graham of Alberton for 'How Earthworms Imprdve Soil Conditions'; second prize (tie) - Lincoln Rix of ATberton for 'Factors Affecting our Weather'; and second prize (tie) — Christiana MacDougaTT of North Bedeoue for 'TidaT Power'. Winners in the junior high level were: first prize - Kaberi Dasgupta of Charlottetown for 'CToninq'; second prize - Lorna Donovan and David MacIntyre of Souris for 'The Wildflowers of P.E.I.' Congratulations to all the winners and participants, and thanks to the NHS judges.

SLIDE CONTEST WINNERS. Winners of the annual nature slide competition are: first — Mary Beth Harris for 'Marram and Sand'; second — Sue Stephenson for 'WiTTow Ptar— migan on Nest'; third - Marian Copleston for 'Frost on Window'; and fourth - Andy Dean for 'American Copper Butterfly on Daisy'. Judging was done by Wayne Barrett, who also had made enlargements of the four prize-winning slides for the winners. Congratulations to the winners and sincere appreciation to Wayne.

COM‘LNGEVEN'I'S

BUTTERle FIELD TRIP. A butterfly field trip is being planned for some hot sunny Saturday in late July or early August. Techniques of collecting, mounting and preserving butterflies will be covered. If interested leave your nane with Geoff ' Hogan at 892-4121.

OCTOBER MEETING. The first meeting of the fall season is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 4th. Daryl Guignion will speak on the Morell River Salncn Enhancement program.

NOVEMBER MEETING. The November lst prograntwill feature a slide talk on Governor's Island, presented by Geoff Hogan, val Beer and Winnie Cairns, who visited the island on a natural history expedition in May, 1983.

CANADIAN NATURE FEDERATICN. Plan m attend the annual CNF conference Aug. 11-14 in Sackville, N.B. This is the first tine in five years the conference has cone east so let's demonstrate real support with a large delegation of Islanders. See the May- JUne newsletter for more details.
