Student Union fees at {PEI will be increased to 55,the student council @cided at their meeting January'26.
The motion was made w council by treasurer mhn Neville and seconded w President Kevin Gauthier. hville presented exhibits md diagrams of how the mes are spent each tear md pointed out that future Student Unions would be in extreme financial difficul- des if the fee increase ms not implemented this war.
During the ten years mat UPEI has been in exiSm mnce,Student Union fees, eve increased twice,once m I970 and again in May n I977. ‘
In the fall of I979,20% f Student Union fees will m into the first of five hyments being made into me Capital Savings Fund. mis fund was established m 1978 to promote saving md investment of Student mion revenue for future npital purposes.
Neville presented the noposed increase to the finance Committee of the hard of Governors.
At the Board meeting hnuary 29,Will MacInnis hairman of the Finance Immuttee moved that the kudent Union fees be
around them, and by enabling them to order their own lives so as to
~achieve their proper ends._

the money situation is for all of us.Unfortunate1y

in a position where we simply could not continue to oper; ate as an effective Union without an increase in revenue.It is regrettable but we had no other alter- native."

The University within westem civilization has a special ccmniment to seek and to study the truths of that civilization by examining its values and its institutions, by weighing them against those Of other traditions, and by transmitting the best of what has been said and done. It is the critic as well as the repository of cultural heritage. The independence of thought and the freedom of inquiry characteristic of the University guarantee that the assurpticns underlying society, including those umbrlying the University, are continually challenged and renewed.
Although the pursuit of truth in all its forms and the formation of the free person have always been the espoused ends of the University, each Univer- sity is itself a product of its own tine and place. As an integral part of its own society, it is, without catprmusing, its ultimate ends, accountable to that society and sensitive to its needs and values.
To fulfill thse general purposes while at the sane tine recognizing the special Obligatims that it has as the only UniVersity in ‘ the Province, the University of Prince Edward Island seeks: /
